What's this all about anyway? Has it ever actually rained cats and dogs? I want PROOF!

I've never heard of an actual Feline and Canine rainstorm, but there has been at least one documented case of raining fish. I don't remember the exact details, but a few years ago, there was a story in the local news about several different people reporting having had fish fall on their cars. After a big investigation, it turns out that there was a pair of nesting vultures who had been dropping fish from a nearby pond, and other assorted items, on passing cars who came too close to their nest (containing several newly hatched chicks) which was in a tree next to the highway.. :)

Maybe some extra large vultures were dropping cats and dogs, thereby leading to the well-known phrase? :D

It has rained frogs, fish, and blue ice, yes.

Usually from tornadoes.

The latter from dirty airplane toilet water.

(That's been regulated I believe.)

The expression "raining cats and dogs" has been traced back to the Dark Ages, when many superstitious people believed that animals such as cats and dogs had magical powers. The cat was thought by sailors to have a lot to do with storms; witches that were believed to ride in the storms were often pictured as black cats. Dogs (and wolves) were symbols of winds. The Norse storm god Odin was frequently shown surrounded by dogs and wolves. When a thunderstorm occurred, people would say it was raining cats and dogs, with the cats symbolizing the rain and the dogs representing the storm winds.

Thank you Wombat.

I knew there must have been a reason for an expression like that. I'll sleep better at night knowing this.
