A few weeks ago my computer started acting really weird: every time I go to shutdown it won't, I mean, it'll cut off but then cut right back on again; so, I'm forced to flip the power supply switch as soon as it starts to cut back on again. I mean, I know it's not going to hurt the computer, but it's getting old, fast.

Anyway, I think it may be a short, but where would a short be located at for a problem like that to occur?

You answered your own question. What seems to be the most likely culprit is a short in the PSU. Could just be a wire in there was carrying a big load for a long time and finally shorted out. But trying a new PSU would be the first thing I'd do to narrow it down, and I wouldn't mess around with it for too long. If it decides to surge before it blows, it can send too much juice to your mobo and then you'll smell smoke, hear a sizzling noise followed by a POP and a plume of smoke rising from your PC, and then your next post will be something like "Building new rig, need opinions" 🙂

Hahaha, well, I'm getting new parts soon. This seems interesting though: There are times when it does cut off on its own...weird. Anyway, I'll just pray that my computer lasts throughout the next week (when I'll be getting my parts), and I can trash the PSU. Couldn't there be just a loose piece of metal touching some point causing the short? (Like when you don't install the standoffs for your motherboard).

Well, if you've been tinkering lately, and then this started happening, than sure it could be metal touching somewhere. But you said it sometimes cuts off on it's own. That means if there was a wire touching, it would have to only be touching sometimes (causing you to lose power), and other times not touching (when it runs fine). You could always try a can of air and blow out your PC really well, but it seems unlikely to me that a piece of wire somehow happened to get inside your case and make a bridge somewhere, but only sometimes.

When your parts arrive, try the new PSU in your old system before you take it apart. That way you can make sure it's the PSU before throwing it away and still having the problem.

Yea, this started happening shortly after I took it apart for a good cleaning. I noticed that when I re-inserted my mobo, the back panel was kinda bent in because the mobo wasn't inserted right. Being the lazy person that I am, I just let it go. Maybe that's it? Oh, also, another problem I forgot to mention started yesterday, where I cut on my computer, and it kept rebooting with no post. Well, once again, being the lazy person I am, I shook it, and it booted up just fine....hmmm, I smell a loose part, eh?
