It's over-heating and I Haven't Overclocked?! is it the volcano 7?

hey all ... i have a problem. my computer keeps getting hecka hot. i think its cuz of my heatsink/fan. i have a thermaltake volcano 7. i am running an xp 1800 on a gigabyte ga-7dx.

it got as high as in the 60's (according to my bios and speedfan if i remember correctly). i dont know how fast the fan is running but im thinking that the sensors on it are somehow screwing with how fast its running. how do i fix this so it cools down? normally it runs around 46-48 ... i heard thats still pretty hot for not oc'ing or anything.

edit: im running a desk fan on it (like a full on fan) to cool it down ... it was running at 56 when i came home ... now its at 49. my computer was hecka slowing down.

you might want to add some fans to the case and think about getting a new CPU cooler. Try reseating the cpu cooler, it may not be on 100% right

I have a 1700 in an Iwill kk266-r with an alpha pal8045 and at full load I got all the way to 38 degrees Celcuis.

Case-Mod sells the Aplah fro $30 plus fan and sipping. Not a bad price and the guy who runs that site is a fellow anandtecher! 🙂

If you buy from him, let him know i sent you 🙂

How does your CPU temps compare with your system temp? A good rule of thumb is keeping the chip temp within 20º of sys temps. Better airflow through your case might help.

I have a Thermaltake Volcano 7 cooling my 1GHz AMD Thunderbird AXIA @ 1.4GHz and it's at 48ºC. I actually replaced that Smart Fan with a regular 2900RPM 80mm Coolermaster case fan and temps are that cool (and quiet). It's not the heatsink.

Did the change of temperature occur after you made any changes to your system, such as a change in the BIOS settings, or taking off your heatsink to reinstall it? Or did it just suddenly start running hot?

Sorry, Arctic Silver 3 is not compatible with your operating system.

j/k. try using a cpu cooling program like VCool, www.vcool.de

it'll cool ur cpu way down when ur not full load and save a few years

your heatsink is probably just not seated right

make sure it is making FULL contact with the die and it should lower the temp

also make sure you have good ventilation..if you need case fans get 10x panaflo L1A's for 28.50 shipped here

The Volcano 7 is not the problem. It would almost have to be the way the HS is installed or you have an airflow problem. Check those again and that should take care of it.

Good luck,

i actually had a similar problem with my tbird 1.4 on a gigabyte ga-7dx. it turns out that my motherboard was actually kinda faulty, and was supplying 1.8 volts to the core, which causes my comp to run idle at about 50 degrees. the board doesn't support any voltage adjustments, so my solution was to grab a refurb shuttle ak31a from newegg. cost me about $50 and dropped my cpu temps by about 10 degrees.

so you may wanna check your core voltage. if that's the problem, either get ready for hours of getting nowhere on the phone with gigabyte support, or buying a new mb.

hope this helps.

I agree with MrDogMan. Reseat the cpu. Go to arctic silver's web site to see how to properly put thermal paste on. Remove the grey stuff they put on the heatsink. I have a V7 and XP1600+ overclocked to 1574mhz (174mhz overclock) and my temp is 36-39 celcius with a case temp of 30 celcius. Ambient temp is about 24. I have the best luck with the fan blowing down onto the heat sink. Also, make sure the heat sink isn't touching any capacitors that might cause it not to sit fluch with the cpu. Finally, I did mod the location of the thermal sensor. I put it inside the heatsink between two tines. It runs at about 3500 most of the time. Prior to doing that, I was getting temps around 40-41 celcius.
