This is my "Free" camry I got late last year. Still haven't fixed the timing on it, and it looks like a seal is leaking, but it gets me to and from work every day.

Those 4 cylinders like to rip the head bolts out of the block, but you did good for free

No they don't (if we are talking 5SFE). The only real problem with these engines aside from being gutless is the internal balancer assembly gets loose and both reduces oil pressure and introduces metal into the oil pan from the balancer's journal bearings. Most mechanics who rebuild these engines just leave the balancer out because they are so prone to fail and tap and plug the oil galley. Same engine runs fine without a balancer in every other Toyota application from Celica, MR2, Rav4, etc, they only put the balancer in the Camrys.

The rest of the engine is stout, and doesn't have very high compression or rev high enough for there to be head bolt problems. The puny rod bolts would be the first to go under severe abuse. The crank and block from the 5S Camry are the preferred choice for 500+ hp 3SGTE stroker builds due to being indestructible.

The 2.4 from 02 to 06 in the camry are well known to strip the center 3 headbolts at the back of the engine and go through water pumps

This is a 92-96 Camry with a hefty iron block, not a puny little aluminum block 😛

that 2.4 motor is not the same as the 92-96 camry. 5sfe is a 2.2 as well. It might leak oil here and there but i think they motor will almost always run.

Can't beat that for free! I have about 205K on my Accord, I doubt I'll keep it to 300K but I'd be willing to try if she'll hold up.

Happened on Easter Sunday heading to my Grandparent's house. My second car to go over 200,000 miles, and I'm only 22. 🙂 Both American cars, oddly enough, my 1996 Firebird and now my 1995 Cutlass. GM motors rock.
