Indeed.

Wikipedia opens up knowledge to the commons, taking away elite status of college professors (or so they fear). Spreading information far and wide is a good thing and the moronic stance by many professors that Wikipedia can't be used runs counter to that.

That is not why WIkipedia is not allowed in college-it isn't a primary source and is the same reason why encyclopedias aren't allowed.

Only an idiot would think Wikipedia is useful source to actually cite.

Wikipedia is great for finding those primary sources and getting you started. But the University library is still way better. Pretty much anything you need on an individual subject can easily be found within the same shelf space--much like wikipedia. --and these are the actual sources that you "may" find on wikipedia. though, in many cases, you won't.

lol. SOPA is gonna pass. It'll be Obama's version of Clinton's DMCA.

If Republicans didn't have such retarded beliefs in an imaginary man in the sky, and believed in aborting fetuses, I'd probably be one of them by now.

Fucking Liberals are a joke these days.
The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as H.R.3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX)

Wow, we may actually have to open a book at the library and do research.

Let them do a black-out.

Would anyone really notice?

I would notice. Most people would not notice.

So...have you actually used wikipedia for anything that actually matters? You rage about what some other loser posted about some dumb video game or some shithole movie that nobody gives a fuck about?

OK.
Wiki is the first place I go for drug info. It was the site that told me benadryl is not an antihistamine. It's actually an acetylcholine antagonist ;)

I think every website that could have been killed by sopa should go dark for 24 hours in protest.

Youtube, google, yahoo, wikipedia, etc. Just close up shop for 24 hours and return a anti-sopa message.

That would get it across.

Oh God, if only Google by themselves would put their money where their mouth is in protest to SOPA.

Wait, if Wikipedia closes down to protest SOPA, then how will I use Wikipedia to learn what SOPA is?

I think it would be good if the big sites that would be affected shut down in protest. It woulf get the attention of the people who use those sites and then the government would have a lot of angry people to deal with.

If Google and Facebook shut down to protest SOPA, it would never in a million years pass. That's literally all that needs to happen to guarantee the failure of the bill. But I doubt we'll see that, even though those are two sites which could be immediately shut down because of the ramifications of SOPA's passage.

I wholeheartedly support Wikipedia's stance on SOPA.

And it'd be awesome to see Google/Youtube and Facebook shutdown to protest SOPA.

That's what's wrong with this country(one of the things anyway). People somehow deluding themselves that the Republicans, and Democrats are different parties. The partisan horseshit is tedious, and while all the sheep are standing around bleating at each other, the jackasses you elected to office are stealing the country and giving it to their corporate puppet masters. Wake the fuck up...

Someone explain to me why this SOPA thing is so horrible. I glanced through the Wiki article on it (ironically enough) and it wasn't clear to me how this is "THE END OF THE INTERNET AS WE KNOW IT"

Ben, AFAIK, it means they can and will remove any content that is copyrighted, which is probably a huge chunk of the internet.

Google it. Ask Google to find "why SOPA is bad" (search the quoted statement). There are numerous articles, but the EFF sums it up fairly well.

Here is another one: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/12/how-sopa-affects-students-and-educators

I would quote them, but I don't want to risk bringing possible liability to myself or Anandtech for posting copyrighted content if SOPA passes.

It's most visited because it's one of the first that come up in searches. Honestly, if they up and went poof..some might notice, but someone else would take their place. It is the internet after all.
