They're saying it wasn't Niagra Mohawk now. Governor Pataki said those reports were incorrect and also a statement from NiMo said that the cause was not due to their system.

Pataki said earlier reports that a major power plant at Niagara had been the source of the outage were "completely inaccurate."

NERC said in a statement that the problem "appears to have been largely caused by the loss of several major power lines in the upper Midwestern United States."

I work for Central Hudson Gas and Electric. We service about 300,000 customers between Con Ed and Niagra Mohawk's service territory. All I know for sure is we didn't do it! But we certainly went down like everybody else.

the Niagra-Mohawk Grid failure in NY.

that's been pretty apparent since early into this whole mess, but what was the cause of the grid failure?
So far the they believe a lightning strike at a power plant started the whole thing.

nope
That was the first explaination. The fire at the Niagra Power Plant in NY is considered the cause.

Appearently 140 miners are trapped in Sudbury still.

Ottawa has had looting going on.

2 people have died: one in a fire, the other in a car accident.

Its a damn conspiracy I tell you. A couple of days after the media comes out with reports America is too obese, especially NY,we all had to walk miles to get home. Took me 3 hours to walk 18 miles... Manhattan to Brooklyn. That was not fun.

I would still like to know the cause, but they should take as much time to find out the true cause--instead of giving a false cause.

Good for those of you who have your lights back on. It makes a difference always having light but one day it suddenly disappears. I don't think many people get prepared for that scenario, since they are so used to always having a reliable system. Hope everyone, or close enough, gets back electricty by the end of the week.
According to the Ontario Government and the Canadian Government and Hydro One: The cause was in NY.

hehe thanks, I was going to make the best of the situation, so I exercised too. Had to help carry this little kid across the bridge though, cause her grandmother was tired.

Think he mean't what fire in the power plant?

I've heard that a grid in Ontario lost power and Niagra sent some to make up for the lost and it overloaded it, and the safety systems shut down everything. Either Niagra sent too much power or Ontario's grid failure is to blame.

Well, all right Iron Woode! I guess Americans just like to blame Canadians or at least leave room to blame Canadians. I remember a power outage a few years ago that was blamed on Canada. :p I feel sorry for you guys. ;)

Good one, Red Pickle. I guess this is good in way, since it gets people walking by foot. I wish it would be extended West too for the spoilt food comforters. :D I should be careful what I pray for though . . . it isn't cool when you're so used to having electricity all the time and then losing it for an indefinite time!

From CNN

Pataki said earlier reports that a major power plant at Niagara had been the source of the outage were "completely inaccurate."

NERC said in a statement that the problem "appears to have been largely caused by the loss of several major power lines in the upper Midwestern United States." (Interactive: U.S. power grids)

The Associated Press reported Friday that indications pointed somewhere along Lake Erie in Ohio, citing the industry-sponsored group that monitors the transmission system.

"That's where the information is starting to point,'' Ellen Vancko, a spokeswoman for NERC, told The Associated Press. She said it would take time to pinpoint the cause.

I'm a bit east of you out in the country. For once I'm real glad we have a well and septic. Normally it's a PITA since the city water is almost always on and we loose water when the power goes out, but it's real nice now. :)

CNN seems to indicate a US power grid issue as the cause.

Problably best not to worry about the cause now, but deal with the problems instead.

I went to bed before they restored power here in TO. Woke up at 6am, saw my router lights blinking, went back to sleep.

Spent the night at the park, followed by a candle lit BBQ and a game of monopoly.
