the Niagra-Mohawk Grid failure in NY.

I just got power restored a few hours ago.

Most of London Ontario had power by midnight, but not my suburb. :|

No damage to my server thank goodness.

How is everyone else doing?

Power came back on here in Toronto about 2.5 hours ago. Apparently I'm not supposed to go to work today, state of emergency in the province. But we'll see. :)

And there was the Mayor of NY trying to blame the Canadians, when it was the British that caused it :D

Cool.

I still have to go to work. :(

This was the worst power failure in Ontario since the November 1965 Black Out.

I wonder if there's gonna be a mini-baby boom 9 months from now. Because really, what else was there to do? :D

that's been pretty apparent since early into this whole mess, but what was the cause of the grid failure?
So far the they believe a lightning strike at a power plant started the whole thing.

you guys are just spreading more false truths

There was no lightning strike at the Niagra grid - there wasn't any lightning within 100 miles of that location. The Niagra shut-downs were partial, and were in response to the failures elsewhere - built in safe-guards.

The fact remains that they have no idea what caused the problem - the initial reports indicate that the problem may have started somewhere along Lake Erie, but much investigation has yet to be done.

The possibility exists that cyberterrorism might be the cause. It's still too early in the investigation to say for sure. There are groups out there that might have the knowledge to interfere with system control and management.

I am in Texas, I was reading about the NY blackout this morning and my electricity went out! Ironic!

I just checked, and yes, we are still under a state of emergency. Citizens are to stay home unless they are essential or emergency workers.

I am trying to get a hold of my boss to see whether I go into work or not.

No state of emergency here in NY (LI)....probably have to go to work today. Insurance companies....all you people are still getting into car accidents so no day off for me.

Just went to work - power still out there, so I'm back home now. (Long Island)

Thanks for correcting the impression given by the original poster or others, NeoV.

I would still like to know the cause, but they should take as much time to find out the true cause--instead of giving a false cause.

Good for those of you who have your lights back on. It makes a difference always having light but one day it suddenly disappears. I don't think many people get prepared for that scenario, since they are so used to always having a reliable system. Hope everyone, or close enough, gets back electricty by the end of the week.
