Never used an F-301 but recently I've taken a liking to Pilot Hi-Tec-Cs (.4mm tip) and Pentel Hybrid Technicas (.35mm tip). When I feel like using a ballpoint, nothing beats Uni Jetstreams...

Zebra pens suck balls.
Rite in the Rain pens are awesome. Space pen insert, with a solid steel shell thats much tougher than the Space pen shell.

I used to have a really nice metal mechanical pencil from them. It wasn't well suited to field use due to the weight, and I shortly broke the tip off :^( It was a great pencil while it lasted.

I've never had that problem except when dropping them! :(

That's exactly what happened. Plastic pencils are light enough to be dropped with minimal damage, but that Rotring was hefty. The first time bent it way over, but I managed to straighten it fairly well. I wasn't so lucky the second time. I'd get one again in a heartbeat if I had a desk job where I'd be less likely to drop it. I love the weight of those pencils :^)
