It's now legal to drink and paddle a canoe

That... probably should still be illegal. Driving offense? Probably not... but... probably on par with being as dangerous as riding a bike while drunk.

The amount of injury you can cause with a non motorized vehicle is kinda laughable and it would not require alcohol to do that, nor would alcohol really increase the odds. It's not like you're going super fast having to make split second decisions like with a motor vehicle. Now if you're pissed drunk going across all lanes and causing traffic to have to try to avoid you then that would probably be public intoxication anyway.

With a canoe though, there's really not much risk other than to the people inside of it. Suppose you could be so drunk that you decide to go through a hydro dam or something. Though I always thought it would be kinda fun to go down a spillway... 😛 You don't need to be drunk to do stupid things.

It's stupid to have any kind of boat, canoe or kayak on a body of water with a drunk operator. Period.

If you can't wait until you are done on the water to have a beer then you have a problem.

lol there's not all that much issues with a non motorized vehicle. If you are drinking to the point that you are doing dangerous things in a non motorized vehicle chances are you would be doing dangerous things regardless of what setting you're in. I'd say operating a camp fire while drunk is probably more dangerous than a canoe or pedal boat on an open lake. Unless you are drunk to the point that you decide to have a camp fire inside the canoe. 😛

This is not about being pissed drunk, that's stupid regardless. This is about having a few drinks. That will do zero harm. Not to mention that in a typical canoing setting there is nothing or no one around to even be a danger towards unless you really suck at picking good camping spots. Me personally I don't tend to drink when on the water as that tends to involve being in direct sun light, so if I'll drink anything it will probably be water, but I also believe in freedom.

Sounds like someone needs an intervention for his drinking and canoeing problem. 😛

Nah I've never done it myself, I just think it's silly that it was even illegal in first place. I just believe in freedom. Too many stupid laws out there that need to be removed, such as this.

Apparently including the "freedom" to engage in pointless behavior with a strong potential for injuring other people (or even just other people's property, or for putting an unnecessary burden on rescue services, etc...) If someone's doing it off in "wilderness", nowhere near anyone else, then fine - better still if they do it before they reproduce<lol> - otherwise, not so much... (And it's worth noting that if they are in fact only doing in that situation, there's not much chance of getting busted in the first place...)

Seriously, this used to be illegal and you could lose your driver's license over it! Glad they changed it. Was a retarded law in first place.

Omg we use to take 2 day trips down the Shenandoah with canoes packed with beer and Ice. There was even a put in halfway through the trip where you could walk a few hundred feet to a small shack store where you could restock with ice and more beer! Awesome smallmouth bass fishing.
