The firm I work at has just laid off a secretary, and I suspect we have received a grand total of 5-6 incoming phone calls today (down from probably 100+ normally)..

This is was never my dream job, but regardless of my plans.. wow. This economy thing is REAL.

On a side note, in my classes, I have seen several distinguished speakers come in and talk about their firms.. and they have said there isnt much work there either..

Now I've seen it first hand..

I saw it firsthand when my boss told two employees that one of them was getting canned. Whoever lost in a fistfight. We all watched them go at it like animals. Like damned beasts at lunch time, two weeks back. One is still in traction. The other still has his job. Boss won't try and lay him off again, will he?

You work for the NYPD?
BTW, the guy that lost should contact LS's firm, sounds like a good lawsuit to me.

It is unbelievable at the entry level.. as a college grad I am having a harder time finding a job now than when I dropped out of college in 2006. When I dropped out I landed 1 job within a week with great benefits (travel industry) and then lost it due to a failed drug test (ironically because I had traveled to amsterdam). A week later I got another, higher paying job. Now those wages I landed twice within 2 weeks are a distant memory and I'm looking at a dollar or two above minimum wage, probably taking another 3-4 months to find at the rate my callbacks are going. I didn't even find anything new to apply to today, just did some more unsolicited resumes.

It's biggest in Alberta. This is why unemployment there has been under 4% for the entire province. A good portion of those laid off end up dying in hospital shortly after. That is the only province that has legalized weapons in these unemployment fights.

The Movie industry is grinding to a halt. Hopefully things are going to start moving forward in the next few months if not and i will drop my apartment vs go into debt.

I know it is seasonal.. but the Plants Nursery near where I live.. is like a ghost town.. they also sell carpet and animal feed etc... and nobody goes there anymore..

Could also be due to a Huge JAX store that opened in town... killing off mom and pop

Let me also add I'm seeing signs up all over the place for rentals. It's crazy. I think we are in for some serious shit.. Never in my life did I think it was possible to repeat the 30's but now i just don't know.

I have to agree with you Jstorm. I'm graduating college in the next month. I've looked a little bit for jobs, but I'm not optimistic. Luckily I actually have a pretty good job (albeit in retail) making a bit over $40k a year working part time. My fiancee makes another $30k. So we make decent money and keep our expenses as low as possible. We have been looking at buying a house in the next few months (something we really want to do, as we really don't have enough space). My fiancee isn't big into news/politics/etc. so she doesn't really grasp what is going on. I don't want to scare her or anything, but shit. I'm a bit nervous myself. I'm not one of those doom/gloom type of guys, but its bad news upon bad news. There hasn't even been a hint of recovery yet either.

Cliffs: I'm a bit nervous myself.

well, if this is your first house, and you have the credit/down payment to pay for it, then now is probably the best time to buy due to low FIXED interst rate, lowest prices, housing credit etc. as the money you pay for the rent would probably equal to your mortgage payment.

I dare say that most who've yet to be laid off or similar and who don't follow the news a good deal don't know how bad it is. Months ago there were still plenty of bulls in P&N saying it's not that bad, get back to me when the market such and such, and it's already happened and/or happening.

Less, actually. For Principal and interest at least, taxes and what not will cost us a bit more. The deciding factor for us though, is the fact that we will get an 8k handout. (I don't necessarily agree with it, but I'd be a dumbass if I didn't take it). That right there is a pretty good financial reason for us to buy one.

*edit*

And the way I look at it. If the economy really is as fucked as it seems to be, I'll be in less trouble than the vast majority. Sure, I might lose my job/house too, but if that happens that means almost everyone has and that'll be the least of my worries.

exactly right. housing is a necessity, you'll need to pay for it anyway. So If you actually qualify (700-800 credit score??!!) , buying is the best thing you can do now...

couple things.. you should get
1. get a fixed rate, file it in your tax
2. try for foreclosured houses.. lower price
3. payment should be close to equal to your current monthly rent... think of Necessity rather than luxury..

My Girl friends house has lost wait for it...$80,000 of value  She's ok and didn't have some crazy loan but i can totally see how some people would just say fuck it and walk away. The thing is she is a phd student and the jobs are waiting and if not she will just roll right back into academia.

1. 720's a piece, check.
2. pre-qual for 4.7% fixed FHA loan, check.
3. About the same as monthly rent, for a place 1000 sq feet bigger with a yard, check.

Most people are living in a bubble until the depressed economy personally has a effect on them.

yea that is the only funny part about it.. half the people I know with jobs think everything is fine, even ones whose companies are downsizing or being bought out.

I did it first hand. Laid off my administrative assistant felt really terrible and delayed it until well after Christmas even though I wanted to back on Oct plus paid her 10K severance but we are doing the work of answering phones, accounts receivable/payable etc. Could not afford her with oil @30 and housing bust among others things.

Traveling to Amsterdam makes you fail drug tests? They should really put that in the brochures!

yep, after 9/11 dutch customs used a "smoke this joint or go home" policy at the border to screen out foreign terrorists. They figure no honest tourist would be visiting for any other reason
