If I remember correctly, it is because he thought he could get some peace and quiet in a bomb shelter. He falls asleep reading or something and wakes up after the explosion. He finds out the city is all empty and has a spasm all over the library. Somewhere along the line, he drops his glasses and steps on them. Ha-Ha.
