It's nice to see New Years Resolutions fall through

So far, this first week of February, the gym has been a lot less crowded.

Less chance of my machines being taken!

But, if you're still keepin' at it, then more power to ya!

Been debating about whether I can afford to get a gym membership. There's one not too far from me that some of my friends go to and has classes that are appealing to me. It'd be nice not to take a short break from running outside and do some of the classes at the gym a few days a week once the temperate notches over a hundred degrees. Budget is tight though and I'm hesitant to add another monthly expense.

The city of Phoenix just passed a food tax, the state of Arizona is putting an extra sales tax on the ballot, and the city of Avondale where I live is holding a special ballot initiative to raise property taxes. I'm not sure I'm going to have money for PBJs and ramen after the government gets done bleeding me. 🙁

Well, perhaps if you didn't use machines you wouldn't have this problem. Machines are for bodybuilders, the injured, and noobs. If you're not one of these, you might want to change what you use (i.e. barbells or dumbbells for functionality).

The local Gold's Gym here where I live only charges $10/month for membership fees. I'm not sure if that's the case for every Gold's, but that also means that it's very crowded - even more so around the new year.

I still haven't seen much of a slowdown, but fortunately not that many use the benches and squat racks.

Wowee! I thought I paid next to nothing for my gym membership when I was paying $20/month!

I don't go to the gym any more, but I always hated going there in January. It was typically a 15-20 minute wait for a treadmill. Another thing I avoid in January is going out to eat. All those gift cards make the wait really long.

Generally between 5pm and 7pm, the place is packed. That's the only time I can make it since I work 1st shift, and I start getting a little sluggish after 8.

They have probably 30 treadmills and every one of them is taken when I go there, but I don't care since I don't use them, but that many sweaty people sure make that place pretty humid :/

Yes, that makes a huge difference. 5:30 to 7:30 M-F seems to have the biggest surge of New Year's Resolutionists.

Hm, that's funny. At my university's gym, if you go after 1pm, you're gonna have to wait for everything (even for our three power racks). Darn college kids gettin' in shape and knowing that squats are good for you 😛

I think he was using it as a generic term, not necessarily machine. (Benches, etc) I can't say my gym really has that problem - one of the older 24 Hour's in the area (IE, still has the old circular track) - but it's great - it's the same people morning in, morning out everyday that go on a consistent basis. All the soccer moms and fatasses who give up all go to the newer ones. Fine by me. 🙂 Does make for a lack of eyecandy though, although every once in a while something nice wanders in. 😉

Yeah, I could see that happening when the majority (or all) of the attendees are college students, who usually have different schedules than the typical 8-5 workday. The gym I used to go to didn't have many college students (probably because they worked out on campus), so the vast majority went there after getting off work at 5:00.

now that you've mentioned it, I have been seeing a lot less people douching it up at 3mph for over an hour at the treadmills. 😛

This the problem with everyone (self included) preaching about barbell work in a logical program. Word has gotten out about "Riptoe's" 🙂

Yep. At all the college gyms I've gone to, the most-crowded times are pretty much between about 2pm and 9pm, give or take. At non-college gyms, 5pm-7pm are the magic hours; outside of those, things generally aren't bad at all.

The beginning of this and last semester have been particularly crowded, although it looks like the place is finally starting to calm down a bit. Parking lot's still ridiculously full for some reason, but the free weight area hasn't been too horrible.

When I was in school, the college gym was almost always packed....but it was built when the school had < 5000 students, as opposed to its curreny 20,000+......
