Makes me curious why it's so accepted and ok to dress up as an American Indian (see the costumes in the stores) but African American costumes are so taboo.

And why is it okay to be Charles Manson or any other mass murderer? Halloween is the most prejudiced holiday. I can dress up like a doctor or a police officer, but dressing up as a software developer or any other profession similar to that is not considered a costume...

Ditto the Boston Bombing costume. Its sick, but she has a right to be stupid.

Also I hear she got fired which is just fine by me. I believe you have the right to make huge mistakes as well, and suffer for them.

Freedom of expression is certainly a right; however, there is no "right" to be stupid.

That's why people can be fired from their jobs for such behavior. "Stupid" is not a protected class.

I think it should be made illegal to contact any employer in an effort to get one of their employees fired or reprimanded based on something you saw about them online. It should also be made illegal to fire an employee based on something they did online or in their private time, as long as it was legal. It should be considered wrongful termination.

The Trayvon Martin thing was an enormous story in the news for over a year. It is completely natural for it to show up in a few peoples' Halloween costumes around the nation. You can argue that it's insensitive or ill advised, and that might be so, but there's a pretty strong tradition of people trying to deliberately go for offensive costumes to get a reaction at some party or something. This kind of thing happens a lot particularly among the youngish and those who drink a lot.

It may not be humanity at it's finest moment, but anyone losing their job or being harassed over it is a far bigger problem than the costumes themselves.

Isn't firing people just another form of self expression?

I think the rights to be stupid and express yourself like an asshole are more important than other people's right to not be offended.

Just dont be surprised when only assholes wanna be your friends from now on.
Agreed. There is and should be no right to not be offended, but there are and should be consequences to being offensive. Especially being offensive without being funny or clever. If that includes being fired, so be it.

dumbass got herself fired. Dressing up as a Boston bombing victim... at a work party. At least all the other ones here were private parties.
