My roommate's car was reporting 110° on Scholls Ferry yesterday.

Granted that's coming off of asphalt, but still... 110° is nuts for around here.

I was down at Crater Lake just before the 4th of July, and there was still snow there! We were on our way home from Cali (Davis/Sacramento and Yosemite) so it was really strange.

End of heat wave in sight: 80s starting tomorrow.

We've been wanting to visit Crater Lake ever since they received those new tour boats. It will be our first time there :)

How long of a drive from Portland is it and what cities nearby offer affordable and comfortable lodging?

We stayed at Medford. It's a pretty quick drive from there. We left Medford at about 10, spent a few hours at Crater Lake, and were home by about 6. Drove in the South entrance, left the North entrance and hit I-5 at Eugene. Starting at Medford, we took 227 north to 63, then into the park, then took 138 east to 97, then north to 58, west to Eugene. You could also stay at Klamath Falls or Roseburg. I imagine that lodging in the park itself is probably about full, unless you want to go midweek. Entrance price isn't bad, like 10 bucks a car. I think you can tent camp, don't remember.

Warning: don't bother to go to Wildlife Safari at Winston. They doubled entrance prices to something like 18 per adult and 11 per kid. That's just unreasonable. Until earlier this year, I could get in for free with my Oregon Zoo membership, now they want us to pay 1/2 price (which is, coincidently, about the same as full price not long ago.) I remember when they charged like 8 bucks a carload.

Oh, and Portland is around exit 300ish on 1-5, Eugene is about 190, Roseburg is about 119, Medford is about 40. From Medford, it's maybe an hour. From Eugene, maybe a couple hours.

If you just want a nice drive someday, try taking 22 east to Sisters, then drive back to Eugene along the McKenzie River. The McKenzie River is one of my favorite places.

Another nice drive is the loop from Philomath to Waldport to Newport (or reverse.) I grew up there (Coast range near Philomath), so that was "going to the beach" for us.

Battle Ground Lake (NE of Vancouver - no power boats), Vancouver Lake (no power boats), Clackamas River (Clackamette Park), anywhere on the East Fork of the Lewis River (Paradise, Moulton Falls, Heisson Bridge, Sunrise), North Fork of the Lewis River (east of Woodland, WA -- Merwin Lake, Yale Lake, Swift Resevoir), Washougal River (Doogan Falls), Sandy River (Oxbow, Lewis and Clark), Columbia River (Wintler, Dintler, Kelley Pointe, Sauvie Island).
Take yer pick :)

edit: Portland is exit 300, Eugene (105 connector) is exit 194, Roseburg (Harvard Blvd., downtown) is exit 124, Medford is only 2 exits - Crater Lake Hwy is exit 30 and Barnett Rd. is exit 27 (downtown is in-between the 2 exits).

This was from memroy, I have driven I-5 through the length of Oregon more times that I even want to count.

edit2: The fastest way to Crater Lake from Portland is to take I-5 to Roseburg exit 124, then east on Hwy 138 (follow the signs to Glide) for approx. 60 miles (don't forget to stop and look at the "Colliding Rivers"). This will take you to the North Entrance of the park (which is closed in winter btw). Expect a total drive of roughly 550-600 miles round trip.

Are you serious? That's way too expensive. Sure, it's interesting, but come on!!

Yeah, sucks. I told the woman at the ticket booth "Forget it" and left. Was glad that it wasn't the destination for our trip, just a car break, would've been really pissed if I drove down specifically for that. Check out

their webpage, prices are unreal.

There was already one LAN party in Portland, PDXLAN, which was out at the airport Holiday Inn back on July 3rd-6th. I went, it was a blast.:)

I heard about it from some friends, who heard about it from a smaller LAN group they went to in Salem. Too bad you guys couldn't come, from the sounds of it, Intel and Nvidia were giving away some great swag.:) I'll make sure to mention the next big party once it gets near.

PS The URL is http://www.pdxlan.com/, they're already planning a PDXLAN:2004
