I got a notice from my kid's school saying that clown costumes will not be allowed this year.

Ronald McDonald is now laying low:

McDonald's says Ronald McDonald is keeping a low profile with reports of creepy clown sightings on the rise.

McDonald's Corp. said Tuesday that it is being "thoughtful in respect to Ronald McDonald's participation in community events" as a result of the "current climate around clown sightings in communities." The company did not provide any other details about how often its red-haired mascot makes appearances, and how that will change.

The burger chain's decision comes after a rash of pranks around the country that have involved eerie clown sightings. The reports have forced police in some areas to respond.

The pro-clown event was meant to show that "clowns are not psycho killers," and quickly made national headlines.

Several school principals in Sarasota County are trying to address the creepy clown craze before it becomes an issue there.

A recorded message urging parents to discuss with their children the clown phenomenon went out to parents of four schools last week: Sarasota High School, Brookside Middle School, Pine View School and Riverview High School.

According to the school district, the message also told parents that each school's "amazing counseling team is always available to assist with any child who may benefit from talking about their concerns."

Sarasota High School Principal David Jones included a line that "students are not permitted to wear clown costumes, masks, or makeup to school or any school events."

"Schools have to get involved in everything now and it's just a sad world we live in," said Jessica Egan, whose son is in fourth grade. "I think deep down he's scared."

Creepy clown sightings have become more common throughout the U.S., and even internationally. Here in the Tampa Bay area, several reports have come in to law enforcement; arrests have also been made.

Goodwill-Suncoast Monday ordered all stores to pull clown costumes.

I think this stuff is ridiculous really. It's actually illegal to dress as a clown in a lot of places now because of this.

How about just letting this thing pass by instead of making so many ridiculous regulations over something so stupid. I guess it's a good excuse for cops to shoot people.

This thing kind of makes me want to setup clown "scarecrows" around. Nothing says THAT is illegal.

Exactly. I remember there was a knockout fad going around a couple years ago where people would film people getting knocked out. That finally died off, unless the media isn't reporting it anymore.

My wife has some weird clown/owl phobia, I've always thought it was a bit ridiculous myself.

Not that I really cared much about clowns myself, it just isn't a phobia of mine personally.

I had clown decorations all over my room when I was a little kid. I still kinda remember them. They never even bothered me. But looking back... that was a really odd choice of decor.
