It's grill time

Lifer
So one of my first major purchases for our new house is gonna be a BBQ grill.

I've had my eye on this one:

http://www.homedepot.com/webap...53&productId=100497511

$299 online, $399 in store. I've got a 10% coupon I'm going to be using as well. Anyone own this grill or have used this one before? I wouldn't mind a Genesis but $630 is a little too high for me :/

EDIT: I ended up getting a Weber Performer. Haven't had a chance to assemble it yet (stupid rain) but I'm really excited! Got it for $329 - 10% coupon from Home Depot.

EDIT2: Well I'm loving the grill so far 🙂 Done a lot of chicken and some kabobs too. I'm not sure if I'm setting up the charcoal properly though (never used a charcoal grill before).

What I did was place my lump charcoal on top of the lower grate. Then I placed a couple of mesquite wood chips (soaked in water) in the char-baskets (http://www.amazon.com/Weber-96...CBIL1/ref=pd_sim_hg_8). Then I place the top grate on. To start er up, I open the vent on the bottom of the grill and on the top of the grill and turn on the gas for about 4-5 minutes.

Questions:
Do you normally just let it burn out when you're done or do you douse the charcoal? I've been letting it die out.
I've been looking for some sort of adapter so I can hook up a bigger propane tank but have not been able to find one. I do see one that supposed to work with the weber Q but does anyone know if it's compatible?
Oh also does anyone have any good online stores to get some charcoal/wood chips? The only lump charcoal I can find locally is some cowboy brand.

TIA!

Yeah I know. I want a gas grill so I can fire up the grill quickly. Also going to get a charcoal smoker as well but that'll be during the summer.

My only gripe with 90% of the grills out there is that the metal is too thin. I like a heavier-guage grill.

I'm not going to give you the gas vs. charcoal discussion, but one thing to consider is whether or not you'd be interested in putting in a permanent grill fixture. I want to build a grill that runs on natural gas... That way I won't have to swap out propane tanks. I've seen some nice NG models at Sam's Club.

Make sure you do a comparison of how heavy the top is and stay away from Stainless Steel unless you can find a really good one. Most are cheap sheet metal that dent and show dents easily....just like stainless appliances.

I've thought about the natural gas route but don't have the money right now to run the line out to the back of the house. We're thinking maybe a few years down the line, really spend some money on getting something nice which is why we don't want to spend too much right now.

Uh..run the line yourself...Very easy to do and saves a great deal of money.

I'm a little reluctant to do so. I've never worked with natural gas before and I'm not even sure where the line is coming into the house (I'm thinking the basement)

Dude, get a Weber Performer. Gas start but you cook with charcoal. You can be cooking on charcoal within 15 minutes without lighter fluid.

I have never used lighter fluid to start charcoal.

a chimney is far better and faster.

I never bothered with that either... old fashioned paper->wood->charcoal. With a lot of fanning 🙂

Maybe I'll try an electric fan this year 🙂

that gives me time to sit and have a beer!

ooooh I never saw that one before. Any idea how easy it is to clean?

I own it.

It has a "pot" that catches the ashes. You have to empty it about every 15 times you cook. Cleaning everything else is just like any other grill.

It takes the small propane tanks that you can pick up almost anywhere.

I have a gas grill also but I NEVER use it anymore.

Basement is a good start. Google around and don't be afraid by the thought of dealing with gas. Turn it off at the source while you work and you'll be just fine. Seriously, its going to save you money and will be great. I wish I could take advantage of something like this.

hmmm now I'm really intrigued. My old cheapy charcoal grills I've used in the past were always a pain to clean. Especially because there was no "pot" to catch the ashes, they just kinda fell onto the patio.

How do you attach a natural gas line to a grill like that?

I have piped natural gas from the city that's metered, would the city have to assist in something like this?
