Yea it's a pretty interesting story if you get into it. I did a whole report and marketing plan for Sony in a marketing class one time. 90% of the people in the class had no clue the original concept for the playstation was a SNES add-on.

"Early in the SNES's lifecycle, Nintendo worked with Sony to develop a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES[1] (http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bl_playstation.htm). Disagreements between the companies prompted Nintendo to cancel its involvement with Sony. Sony eventually used the CD-ROM add-on prototype they had developed as the base for their console, the Sony PlayStation, eventually usurping Nintendo's dominance in the console market. Nintendo never implemented Nintendo games based on a CD-ROM format, though they did allow their Mario and Zelda franchises released for the Philips' CD-i. Instead they disregarded the format altogether and embraced the cartridge format for their next system."

Yeah, I was following the development of the CD-ROM addon at the time, and it had me all excited. I didn't break down and buy a PS1 until late 1997, and that was only so I could play FFVII.

I think its ironic, not really a shame at all. Don't get me wrong, I was always the biggest nintendo fan and especially loved the SNES. But natural selection is the way of things, first Sega and soon Nintendo. Thats my prediction any way, Nintendo should stick to what their good at, games and handheld's. I think Evolution will be their last console.

The SNES CD would have been a bust/mistake anyway. They were just trying to counter Sega CD with a haphazard attempt at going CD.

It would appear that Sony has the thinnest profit margin, despite the amount of money they're making. Nintendo might not necessarily be in as much trouble as it first appears, when you consider cost/profit ratios and all that money jazz that I can't pretend to understand. Sony's stretched thin with the PSP. What do you think?

Not to start a flame war or anything (obviously).

It'd be funny if nintendo went the way of sega, but then sega came back from the depths with a new manchine.

If nintendo and sega were to join, they'd be able to take on sony and microsoft, wishful thinking I know

I knew microsoft were making a 100$ loss with the sale of each xbox at one point...Surprised at sony, thought they'd be better off

The profit margins are all off games and controllers anyway. (Licensing fees and whatnot on games) Accessories as well.

I believe with an internal redesign of the PS2 a year or two ago (not the slimline), they were actually turning a profit on the PS2.

And from what I read, MS is now profitable on the XBox consoles.

Man, I just picked up a SNES at a pawn shop along with Pitfall. Reminds me I definitely need to hook that up soon.

Okay, those statistics are incorrect.

First of all, the numbers for Microsoft and Sony represent their TOTAL revenues from operations, not for their video game divisions - so in that regard alone, you are already artificially inflating (or deflating) numbers relative to Nintendo, whose only basis is in games.

Sony's video game division rakes in money hand over fist, but also remember they are a large player in consumer electronics (low end and high end) and professional-quality electronics as well. The person who wrote up that post is incapable of differentiating between divisions of a company, apparently.
