It's depressing how lazy the country is getting.... (grocery rant)

PREPARED, FROZEN PB&J SANDWICHES? Check your grocer's freezer. COME ON! Seriously, there is VERY little you can't get in a pre=prepared, single-serving form now. Every time I go to the grocery store, there is some new great product. --And it's always just a pre-prepared something else. WTF is next? Don't say the next thing is a mean that is not only prepared, but actually heats itself up. THEY HAVE THOSE ALREADY, TOO. I saw on the other day. Good god. Seriously, can we not take the time to stick a knife into a jar to get our mayo out? It has to be squeezable. And, I know I sure am glad I don't have to make myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich now! That just takes time from my BUSY LIFE that I'll never get back.

It probably takes longer to heat the frozen PB&J sandwich up than making one the "old fashioned" way.

I used to share your cynicism. Then I moved into a college dorm SHARING a fridge with less capacity than my server case (ok I exaggerated a lil'!) Point is, I started to appreciate all those hot pockets and similar foods. I also don't have many utensils, so squeezable stuff is good (not to mention the fact that I have no clean sink to wash any utensils in!)

The weirdest thing I've seen is squeezable yogurt in single-serving pouches that doesn't have to be refrigerated!!! You squeeze it into your mouth, kinda like a freezie-pop.

The one that really annoys me is the commercial for the pre-prepared kid's breakfast, cereal and a cup of milk together to keep in the refrigerator. It shows the parents in bed while the toddlers are up watching TV and eating their little breakfast kits. Geez, appealing to the pathetic parent demographic. What can we do to help out those parents who won't even get up to pour cereal and milk into a bowl for their pre-schoolers?

i hate frozen bread! people, take your bread outta the freezer! with non-frozen bread, a PB&J sangwich should take about 6 minutes to make, including cleanup. It is quite possibly the world's most perfect foodstuff. heh heh I said "foodstuff" (but probably in an incorrect grammatical manner) :(

No, no, no. I've lived in a dorm. Been there, done that. Regardless of the size of the fridge, you can fit MUCH MUCH more "real" food in any space than you can pre-packaged stuff. Take, for instance, the box of frozen sandwiches.... You get a box about the size of an ice cream box, and it has 6 sandwiches in it. --Or you get a loaf of bread, a jar of PB, and a jar of jelly, and you have 12 sandwiches. Actually, much more, but the loaf of bread will run out before the PB and J do. --And the PB and jelly take up much less space. --Just an example.

The George Foreman grill r00lz j00!

And I'm not sure about space, but I will say that "real" food is generally cheaper than the pre-prepared equivalent. For say $30, you can get quite a bit more unprepared raw ingredients than you can hotpockets and ramen.

Well ok, maybe not ramen. That stuff's like four dozen for a nickle.

montana fan is right: that's horrible marketing. people will start thinking that that's the way it should be.

the other prepared product i HATE is the new campbell's tomato soup that isn't condensed. THEY SAVED YOU THE TROUBLE OF ADDING A CUP OF WATER!!!! THAT is worse than the PB&J thing, IMO.

How about the bags of salad. How long does it take to wash and ripe up some lettuce. I bet there a big premium on that.

I think frozen foods allow the country to be more productive by spending less time in the house cooking and more time at work doing something constructive.

Believe it or not Luchini some of us actually like to cook. I enjoy trying new recipes. As much as I like my job I think I would rather spend my time cooking for myself then working for someone else.

I agree, another useless thing I've seen is that Kraft "EZ Mac". What, is making the boxed Kraft maccaroni (sp?) so incredibly complicated that they had to find a way to make it simpler? Slightly off topic (but still grocery store related), why did glass pop bottles become so rare? Am I the only one who still thinks that pop is best from a glass bottle?

Agreed, Zenmervolt. Kraft Mac & Cheese is one of the handful of things I can make and it doesn't need to be any easier! And you're right, glass bottles are best.

One that wasn't mentioned yet in the silly precooked foods category is bacon. Regular bacon, $2/lb. Precooked bacon, about 40 cents/slice!. I'd be paranoid of dropping the box and ending up with bacon bits.
