It's damn near 2015, I'm tired of low resolution...

I want 4K, everything. Yeah, do some scaling like Apple if you must. I'm tired of looking at low resolution garbage. I'm getting old, my eyes are on the back 9 and really starting to suck. I want large displays with ridiculous resolution. I don't give a f*ck about mobile. I want website which use every inch of my 27" monitor. F*ck mobile, seriously. More than half the internet is still low resolution garbage. Even the photos people are taking. Don't ask me to look at your grainy blurry, super compressed photo of whatever. I've got 50 mbps internet, 56K suck it, throw that 8 meg .tiff at me, I don't care. I don't even want to look at 720p video most of the time anymore. If it's not in 1080p or better I don't want to look at it.

I'm fine with 1920x1080 most of the time. If anything my poor eyesight makes resolution irrelevant after a point because I can't make out any more detail above that anyway.
 
Yeah I agree, I find the monitor companies are keeping us in the dark ages. It's pretty sad when phones are catching up to monitors. I want 4k, heck 8k. The more res the better because it means more screen real estate.

GUI elements can always be upscaled a bit if they end up too small but monitors are meant for close viewing so size is usually not an issue.

Exactly, people with bad eyes can't tell the difference between 1080 and 720. Instead they want everything to be large, regardless of the quality. ...Actually a lot of things about our culture just started making sense.

Well, Apple's got that down, at least, better than Microsoft. Granted, DPI scaling within the new APIs for Windows Store apps is phenomenal. But Windows DPI scaling on the desktop is miserable, simply miserable.

I was trying to get the Windows 10 preview to look halfway decent on a MBP Retina, and, well... halfway decent is the best possible descriptor for the final results. Not vey happy with the blurry text. I can ignore scaling, but desktop interfaces on a 15.4" 2880x1800 display is a terrible experience.

No, but they do make 4K OLED.

LCD tech is universal and can be applicable in every situation, but it is far from the best in some scenarios. It's a good compromise that's very versatile.

4K OLED is simply far too unattainable for, well, almost all of us. OLED itself for the living room is basically unattainable for most of us.

Diminishing returns.

My father has a 80 in. television. It looked great for about 30 minutes. Once I got used to looking at the TV it did nothing for my viewing experience. You put an 80 in for a week, and a 60 in. for another week in front of me, I would enjoy the 60 in. just as much as the 80 in. TV set.

Its the same with resolution and video gaming. I don't understand what the big deal is with maxing graphics. 1600*1024 is just as enjoyable as 1920*1080 and even higher. After about 15 minutes you don't even know the difference.
 
I am waiting for Windows 10 before going above 1920x1200. They need to get their scaling solution in order. I want higher DPI, but want to be able to keep text size about the same.

It is Windows DPI scaling holding us back. It is also the video card makers holding us back as you need a very expensive setup to play at 4k.

This makes me sad. I have been holding off building a new PC assuming that Microsoft would finally have solid scaling.
 
Your priorities aren't quite right. Unless you have specific requirements like many open windows on a screen up close on a large screen 4k in itself isn't all that. 1080p plasmas can beat 4k lcds. What I want isn't smaller dots but true 10 bit or higher displays with a much wider color gamut, accurate colors and a vastly improved dynamic range.
 
It depends on the source, if your watching an old TV show from the '60's-'90's it's gonna be 480, there is no magic trick that can turn a lo-res into hi-res image or video
