Inspectors are also engaged in examining Iraq?s programme for Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPVs). A number of sites have been inspected with data being collected to assess the range and other capabilities of the various models found. Inspections are continuing in this area.

Yes and why were these drones not mentioned at his breifing. If this is not a smoking gun I dont know what is.

Now I remember! I don't see this as a problem. They are doing the responsible thing and checking out the programme fully before making a (possibly unfounded) comment about it that could trigger a war.

Everyone was clammering to say how Iraq was procuring nuclear materials and the capacity to refine them - until the Atomic Inspectors shot that arguement to pieces. Lets just wait and see what the inspectors conclusions are first.

Andy

I am sure blix will explain them away as being remotely piloted crop dusters and nothing else.

He does not give any detailed specs on the drones (in the report more information is given - however, this was not in the report given to the US and UK before the presentation; it was also not mentioned in the presentation). He also did not mention the cluster bombs that can be used to deploy chemical weapons.

Why the sarcasm?

They are the experts at this. I have seen no evidence of them doctoring or sanitising reports so far. I believe them over any of the governments we've been hearing so much "evidence" from.

Yes they are the experts and I expect unbiased experts. To not disclose these information and bury this information in a 200 page document is shameful and dishonest. Blix is not being honest and painted a much rosier picture in his breifing than he should have.

Is it just not the case that they are still investigating these - and that to make a quick (and possibly incorrect) decision could start a war - so they are making sure they're right first. As I said above people have been wrong with respect to "nuclear" issues - so I believe they are merely being ambivilent until they are certain.

Go 12:05 into the video and you will hear Blix say:

These discoveries are worth mentioning, even if they are unsure of their intended purposed. All they have to do is state they are unsure of their purpose and being further investigated.

Not disclosing is quite dishonest.

And I still have not heard what those aluminum tubes that Iraq is not supposed to have are being used for. Has anyone else heard?

No, the agreement was to stop all nuclear weapons programs. That was the deal, read the treaty. Or is that too much to ask.

So NK broke the treaty. Does that mean we stop negotiations with them?? Does that lessen Clinton's accomplishments with NK??

They did state - in the briefing - that they are currently investigating the drones. I don't see any dishonesty there.

The aluminium tubes are for producing missiles (within UN prescribed limits) as part of their reverse engineering programme. The Atomic Inspector chap went into quite a lot of detail with regard to the issue of nuclear parts/materials. I'm sure you can read about it in the transcript.

That link is not working. I read a couple of news sources that stated it was omitted from the from the oral report. If this is the case, i stand corrected.

I recall hearing they were not well suited well uranium enrichment, but could be modified to do so. I have not seen hard proof they have been accounted for and are being used in that manner.

He mentioned the inspection of the drones in the presentation, but not the findings. On page 13 of the Unresolved Disarmament Issues report, the specifications of the drones are given. If these were known prior to the presentation, they should have been discussed at length - not avoided.

They're scared that the world will seen them as the gun dropping, run with the enemy behind you people that they are. Then again, they opted for the paper edition.

Edit: oh ya, its in real media format - that could be the problem.

France has a couple billion dollars in oil deals with Iraq... if the Iraqui regime was overthrown, they would all be void. Thats why they dont want the invasion.!

Looks like we both are correct.

Drones declared in blix report, but Iraq did not declare them.

This was not mentioned as an obvious act of non compliance.

With regard to NK. IMHO there aren't so much options - as an option.

NK is playing up at the moment - maybe they'll maintain this stance - maybe they'll back down in the furture once they need the foreign aid? Who knows? What I do know is that you obviously can't trust them - and worse than that you can't effectively blackmail them either. If they do not want to be dependant on US aid you can't force them. If they can't be contained and controlled through blackmail - then as quite a few on this board seem to be saying - some advocate military conflict. IMHO this would be a [/b]hugely[/b] costly and dangerous move and not one that should be taken without imminent, real threat from NK. They have nuclear weapons/materials - and in my mind taking on a country with a nuclear capability (or high probability thereof) is a very, very, very bad idea. Far, far too much risk involved for casualties, escalation, etc. especially since the region is so near to the Chinese border. I cannot think of a single example of an open armed conflict between two nuclear powers (someone correct me if you can). An incredibly dangerous precedent to set.

IMHO, the only viable option is to pressurise a quai-friendly NK aquaitance (i.e. China) to engage the NK with a view to peace brokering with the south. Not an easy choice by any means - but the only one that can possibly work without slaughtering thousands and endangering the security of everybody. The best tool for putting pressure on the Chinese/making them realise this is the only solution is.... the UN.

Andy

Looks like we both are correct.

Could be. I fail to see how Blix failed to mention the drones in his oral report...only at the end, as stated by the link when I heard him mention them (and have reread the transcipt stating this also)?

Apparently Blix failed to mention the drones as being non-declared weapons. I am looking for a full transcript now.

this thread is getting confusing with a third of the people talking about Blix/UN, a third talking about N.K. and a third randomly bashing the french

I agree. I can't see how the "drones" debate can be pushed any further until some feedback from Blix emerges. Now, if we can stop the anti French jingoism that only leaves one topic 🙂

There seems to be little doubt that they were not declared and have excessive range. More non-complaince that UN brushes off.
