DA has bigger problems than I do. He's in Hilo. I'm on Maui.

But looking at the satellite track it's not too far fetched to think this thing will run right over BI and into Haleakala.

Yeah you're right. We're in deep shit if the eye passes over an island, since it's still Category 3, but we're lucky it's just the tips that will be making landfall.

I KNOW there's going to be some idiots that sneak by the roadblocks to surf too. I hate that about some local people.

Ahahahahahahahaha... I can just picture some of the kite boarders... They'll be landing in Guam somewhere.

Keep in mind the strongest winds are usually located along the northeast quadrant.
At least for Atlantic hurricanes anyway. Weather the eye makes contact or not you
will see significant winds from this, if your power grid is not the buried type you
will see power outages. If you need prescription meds make sure you have an ample
supply. At least the storm is moving at a good clip so it will make it a shorter event
however the fast forward speed will also generate higher wind gusts too. Hunker down
boys, your in for a blow....

RECENT MEASUREMENTS FROM A BUOY LOCATED 185 MILES SOUTHEAST OF
HILO SHOW OPEN OCEAN WAVES OF UP TO 18 FT HAVE BEEN GENERATED BY
HURRICANE FLOSSIE. AS THESE WAVES APPROACH THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF
THE BIG ISLAND...SURF OF 20 TO 25 FEET WILL RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT
FLOODING AND DUE TO WAVE RUNUP. SUBSTANTIAL SHORELINE EROSION IS
ALSO LIKELY. ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE AREAS INCLUDE PUNALUU...
VACATIONLAND AND COASTAL PROPERTIES IN THE KAPOHO BEACH AREA.

Yikes, Punalu'u is a black sand beach, probably the easiest to get to on the Big Island. I hope that the storm surge doesn't wash it away :(

Punalu'u on a nicer day

And here is the forecast for Na'alehu/South Point:

Today: Occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 75. Very windy, with a east wind between 40 and 44 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts in excess of four inches possible.

Tonight: Occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 68. Windy, with a east wind between 30 and 39 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts in excess of four inches possible.

We have some dark clouds and some heavier than normal winds here now. If you look at the satellite shots you can see the hurricane pushing some weather up to Maui. Nothing big, but big enough to make you wonder if a round of golf is really a good idea.

Sounds like the whoopin' is just starting over on Hawaii.

Makes me glad I moved here instead of buying that lot in HOVE. ;)

You don't have to worry about losing power in HOVE, though, and the catchment tanks will be filled to the brim!

True! But it doesn't do any good if the house is gone. ;)

We looked at homes in the Puna district 3 years ago...catchment water systems made me leery. Sure, in a wet year you have plenty of water, but in dry years you have to have it trucked in, PLUS, keeping it clean enough to use could be a real problem. I know it works for many, many people, but I think I'd MUCH rather be on city water...

Just another day in paradise. ;)

And as a bit of trivia... Apparently Flossie is a nick-name for Florence. That's what they said on the news anyway... The anchors both had the same  look that I have on that one.

I would love it really. Surf must be awesome right now. Well...maybe a little "too" awesome.
