It's been almost a month since I made this purchase...

I bought snowpants for my girlfriend when we went to Tahoe on 12/20. I was expecting myself to go broke over this and the transaction itself has not shown up in my online statement yet. Oddly enough the food I bought that day using that card has shown up and was posted within a day or two.

Just wondering if this is gonna linger around and someday hit me when it's least expected. This is one of those cards I tend to not use very often and so I check it only when I KNOW I spent on it this month so I can schedule a payment.

Specific question: How long do they have to really post this (like a specified timeframe?)

Update: HOLY CRAP. 9 months later they charged my card for this.

If they try to do it 2 years latter just dispute it as unauthorized charge with an argument that you can't recall ever making that purchase 🙂 Let them provide proof that you bought that item. I am sure most users here will disagree with my statement.

Are snow pants expensive?

You know how we do.

Call them and ask, unless you're hoping for someone to tell you that you should just act as if it never happened and let the CC company sort it out later. That or just keep the $$ under a mattress until they ask for it. Whatever your choice, I hope you make the right one, which is obviously to return the snowpants and get the credit!

It will show up...just be sure you are prepared for when it does. Sometimes different businesses won't post charges to the CC companies but every thirty days or so. If you dispute the charge for this kind of delay, you are a douche and will most likely screw up your credit. Just be careful.

Anyone know if there's a legal timeframe that's required to post a transaction? On one hand I'm hoping they forget, but I'm not gonna be a douche about it if one day it appears (and it's legal for it to appear). I'm just hoping that I don't get screwed one day because it does appear and I forget about it (being a card I don't check regularly because I don't even use it that frequently). $200 is not a life or death thing to me, but I'd rather not get dinged up on late fees or one day have collections on my ass because I cancel the card 3 months down the road and they have nowhere to go to get their $200.

As long as six months to a year, possibly longer.

They don't need to be, but they often are.

OP - you could call the store and ask them why it hasn't posted if you're worried about it showing up later. 😉

Once a purchase is made - a "reasonable amount" of time should not have transpired before your card is debited.

i.e. it would be up to a judge. There are no hard and fast rules or laws here. net30 is common practice - 90 days as well. Most businesses would charge it straight away.

Keep the money for it in the account for sure.

Do the right thing and call the merchant - let them know you haven't been charged. Pay for your stuff.

Cancel the card, and flee to a non-extradition country immediately... preferably one that gets snow.

Finally some sound advice. Normally it doesn't take this long

Before Law School, I used to keep meticulous records of me and wife's finances...there was one Mexican restaurant that consistently never had its debits go through and about one time in 15 or 20 would not show up on our account (we went there alot, great dirty mexican place for lunch in College). Over the 5 or 6 years we lived in that area, we had maybe 40 free lunch/dinners...we've since moved out of state, canceled our bank accounts and never heard from them...

9 months, did you impregnate the snow pants?

lol 😛

I made the charge on 12/20/08.

It showed up 9/22/09. Damn pretty much on time for 9 months huh?

But seriously WTF is this... is there any statute of limitations? I'm fine with paying, it's just that this is lame. You could really mess someone's finances up if you were allowed to do this for every single charge. I almost want to see if there's a loophole... but of course I wouldn't dishonestly dispute a charge....

I'm surprised you remembered. 9 months after buying something I'd probably forget about it and then worry somebody got my CC# and dispute it.

Congratulations! You can stop worrying about whether or not it will appear on your credit card account and now pay it.

Just curious, is she still your girlfriend and why didn't she pay for her own snowpants in the first place?
