I just got back from the NYC event...I could have sworn that they said it was supposed to start at 8, so there we are, standing out in the cold rain and some AMD dude comes out and tells us the "Partners" hour is from 7:30 to 8:30. I dragged a friend who lives in Brooklyn within walking distance of the Lunatorium with me. I live in Queens, btw. Anyway, his working hours are much earlier than mine, so he could only stay for an hour or so, plus the hour we stood outside (doh!).
What did I think? Well, let's just say I wouldn't do it again. But, if I were 20 years old, it would be another story, I guess.
I did win an XP-2200 at the very end of the night. Woo hoo! I also snagged a hat, which I gave to my friend 'cuz he braved the lousy weather and loss of sleep to go to this thing. They gave away about 52 or so of the cpu/fan combos. I think they were all 2200's. So, definitely grateful for that. Then, the long F train home....
The 2 guys in the build-the-box contest both screwed up the floppy cable, so neither copped the big prize. Dudes, every floppy drive I've ever had has the red stripe on the data cable oriented exactly opposite of what the hard drive cables are. I don't know if that's always the case, but it sure was tonight.
One of the builders was too funny...he started putting the cards in while the motherboard was still out of the case. People couldn't believe it. I guess it can be done, but why would you?
The other guy finished his in plenty of time, but had a tough time getting the case cover off. Everyone was laughing at that.
As for the questions...they ran the gamut of AMD stuff and some generic geek stuff. Like "what does VGA" stand for?
Another was "how many pins on the new Opteron processor?" I think it was 950 something or other. Definitely a couple of "let's slap Intel" questions. One was an "all of the above"; it had about 8 choices (a, b, c, d...h) "What does SCSI stand for?" "What is the default IRQ of Com3?" "What does PCMCIA mean?" and some other AMD-related questions.
12:45 am and I have to get up at 6:30...
They should have given away 2400's at least, no? Oh well...I can't complain.
