Well almost :)

Almost finished building my new gaming rig. The only thing that I still need to pickup is round cables for the floppy and hardrive. Well enough babbling here are the specs

Lain Li PC72 case with Antec 350 watt power supply (Powersupply is on the list for replacement)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard
AMD XP3000+ (Barton) CPU
1 gig Corsair memory (TWINX1024-3200LL)
Coolmaster CPU Cooler
ATI Radeon 9700 pro

As soon as I install the OS Ill run some benchmarks and report the results. I cant wait for the workday to be over so I can get started.

Had a typo. it was a 350 watt powersupply

Uh if you don't have the HD yet then how is the system alive? I suppose you could boot from a CDROM but that isn't going to get you anywhere useful.

That looks like it will be really nice. Good to see that you are replacing the PSU. 250 would be a stretch :)

If you don't mind, how much did that set you back?

Actually I have had good luck with these hard drives. I have 40 gigs in 2 otherr machines and the 45 gig which is going into the new rig.

Y'know what's funny? My roommate said the exact same thing to me when I said something to him about his deathstar. I'll tell you the same thing I told him: You're right; until it actually happens, it hasn't happened yet. None of those things prove it won't.

IBM 45 gig harddrive. (had this one sitting around)

Does it seem strange to anyone else that you would spend ~$120 on a mobo, ~$600 on a proc, ~$350 on RAM.... and then use a HDD that was "sitting around"??

To match that machine you need to bust out RAID (or at least that on-board SATA) or even a U160.....

That is the plan but I have shot my upgrade allowance for a few months so it will have to wait. The harddrive was one that I had never opened. It was a replacement for the one that I had that failed about a year ago. (Yes I have had one fail, but not in about a year)

Well, if I wasn't into video at all (thanks to my PVR-350 card), I'd probably be fine with a 45GB drive. But the video recording really chows down on hard drive space - even 190GB is a bit limiting sometimes.:D

I completely agree. And, just because I want to get my two cents in, you would see more of an increase moving to, say, a Seagate 15k.3 than having a 3000+ compared to a 2600+. Or, better yet, you could have gotten a 2100+ XP, a good HSF combo, and an Epox 8RDA+ and been running at 2800+ speeds. PLUS you'd have SCSI. Just my two cents.
