A lot of people lost respect for them. Their music is pretty good.

I just started listening to some of their songs.

IMHO Metallica's recent music is crap. Their status as RIAA slave monkies doesn't help my opinion of them.
 
I'm one. I liked them, but now I have absolutely NO respect for them and not just because they went up against Napster. It was lost because of the way they've done it. To me they just want to nickel and dime their fans and that bothers the hell out of me. (I can see this thread getting into an "is Napster right or wrong thread.)
 
They had three good albums, fight fire with fire, master of puppets, and justice for all.

The black album just sucked with exception of enter sandman. Then there was load of crap, more load of crap, and finally a really big load of crap!
 
As soon as a band does an album of all covers, their career should end. Which is one reason I was actually a little glad that Rage broke up. With the release of Renegades, it seemed as if they were running out of material. Although, it's a really good album of covers. 🙂
 
I lost respect for Metallica, yeah. As for not listening to them? I still do. Some of their older stuff is good, no doubt about it.
 
Haven't used Napster in a long time, its pretty dead with the filters. Long live Morpheus🙂, much better than Napster, even when it was working right

The people who want to download Metallica songs will still get em, they're just deterring poeple who might not know their music and might actually be interested in buying some CDs after listening to a few mp3s
 
I know this can AND is debated both ways but, put yourself in their shoes....

I lost no respect for them at all.
They, as well as every other group do work their asses off to put out music that some people want to listen to and just like anyone else that puts out blood , sweat, and tears, they deserve to get paid for their work.

No, I'm not a saint-do-gooder-better-than-thou-tree-hugger type or anything like that. I just respect the fact that they deserve their due.

I have never used Napster but probably would if that was my "thing".
And yes I do have a burner that has made a few "copies" of software.

Hell I can debate BOTH sides, does that make me a double-debater?😕

However, Fight Fire with Fire was on Ride the Lightning, if that's what you meant.

As far as me not liking Metallica, I've never been a HUGE fan but I've pretty much always liked their music with the exception of most of Load/Re-Load. There were a few good songs on those albums but most of those 2 weren't very good.

Metallica's older, pre-black album stuff was better, IMO. They weren't really big until then.
I saw someone mentioned a few good ones, didn't see Ride the Lightning. I still listen to that one.

fave album is master of puppets
but i also like black album, load and reload

i pretty much like it all cept the newer newer stuff
 
Asif, 10 years ago blood sweat and tears may have gone into their albums, but do you know how they record now? They each have a 48 track studio in their houses and send their work electronically back and forth to each other. If they can afford to do that, they shouldn't feel the need to nickel and dime their fans.
 
I became a fan in 1991 when the Black Album came out, but I was only 12 then, so I was too young to get into them in the mid 80's when they were in their heyday. I've been a fan since then, and I haven't let the whole Napster incident bring down my opinion of them. The whole thing about Jason Newsted leaving, then that Playboy interview left me wondering about the future of the band, but they swear that things are good between the 3 of them these days.....

I'm not sure if that is entirely true. I was just reading on an official Metallica site that the band has booked studio time and are in the writing stages for their new album. I wouldn't doubt that they have recording studios in their homes, but I don't think that is how they are recording their albums.
 
they lost me as a fan that is for sure.

I stopped buying CD's a long time before NAPSTER was around, ever since the RIAA decided they could price fix their crap I got real tired of paying 15+ for CD's, the technology matured enough time for prices to drop not go up.

Oh well I just burn CD's or listen to the radio, screw the industry if they want to screw people. 18 bucks for one decent song is not worth it in my book.
 
metallica doesn't have a bassist, so it would be pretty hard to record anything, actually.

i disappear sucks. the video was cool but only because of the black camaro james has.

everything up to 1992 was good. after that... downhill... master of puppets is probably my favorite metallica album.

FYI: they had already put out three EPs with nothing but covers prior to Garage inc. or maybe it was two.
 
Well, you still need to book studio time to mix an album, too, not just record it. They could just be doing scratch tracks that way.

but all those in direct lawsuit of napster r in the music business for money, not for their passion...its ok to b in for money, nothing wrong wit that, but this issue is the weeder between those who have a passion and/or have talent to sing

I read on a Metallica board that James will be playing bass on the new album, until they find a replacement, so they can start perfecting the songs.

They can kill Napster...but they will never get rid of file sharing...it is hear to stay and will grow exponentially as fast connections become more available.
 
I don't have any respect for a band that sues its fans.

And I lost a lot of respect for Metallica years before Napster. From what I have read, it appears the band members don't have such a high opinion of each other.

BTW, if you debate both sides successfully, Asif, you could be awarded the title of masterdebater. 😀

I personally have listened to Metallica ever since I was cutting teeth(man, I miss 8-tracks)😉

The point was not whether they are suck or the bomb, that's immaterial.

They want us to pay for the music they spend their time and energy to make, whatever ease or difficulty it takes. It's theirs. We pay to listen to it if we like it.
You certainly would want payment for some new bad ass software that you spent your time developing.

On the other hand, it's just music right?
Just copy and share it w/ friends etc., what little you copy won't hurt them right? It won't bankrupt them, right?

Frankly, it doesn't make a bit of difference to me either way.

If there's a song I want to hear bad enough, I may go buy the CD or find &quot;other means&quot; to get it. Depends on what mood I'm in.
