It's 9 PM, and I think I have strep... is the ER the only option?

I'm in Boston. My girlfriend had strep last week and I think I have it this week. But I just got worse and so now I want to make sure it's strep, and then get antibiotics if needed. Are there any minute clinics or anything like that to get antibiotics other than the ER?

Nope. They made it illegal for pharmacies and other medical services to stay open after sundown due to the hospital medical industry monopolies. :)

Go for a hike in the woods with some bacon strapped around your neck. If you're lucky a bear, wolf or zombie will perform a throat amputation and you won't need to worry about your strep.

-Gargle with salt water and/or some anti-bacterial mouthwash
-Go to a walk in clinic tomorrow

It's highly unlikely that you'll die tonight, and the ER will probably be a mess.

You'll end up waiting at the ER for a long time. You might as well go in to a clinic during the morning.

Also, they're are a few 24 hour urgent care clinics. See if you can find on in your area.

Strep Throat is NOT an emergency. Wait until morning and go to a clinic or your GP.

Have you not read the psychosomatic ramblings of OP before? He seriously may die tonight, if he'd just post his address I'd call 911 right now.

Yeah I wouldn't think strep would require emergency care- just go to a clinic tomorrow...

You're talking about strep throat, not a heart attack. Gargle with some salt water, take some tylenol to keep your fever down (if you have one), and go to a doctor or minute clinic in the morning.

Seriously folks, common sense FTW. The ER is for -- wait for it, wait for it -- EMERGENCIES!

RIP dood.

But seriously, gurgle some salt water, take some tylenol, drink a lot of water. If you get a really bad fever get yourself to the ER, but otherwise you should be able to wait until the morning.

lol strep. I no longer go to the doctor for it. I've gotten it so many times in my life that any strain I get is probably resistant to whatever antibiotics they're going to give me. It's not a worry until it gets into your bloodstream and starts to attack your heart (rheumatic fever), which is rare. You'll be fine to wait till tomorrow. Until then, enjoy the equivalent feeling of swallowing molten shards of crushed glass.

The irony of your username is epic.

You are really thinking of going to the ER for strep? While you're at it, ask them if they can get your balls to drop. Thanks for contributing to the crazy wait times at ERs.

Go buy some Zicam Losenges. Won't magically cure you but zinc has been proven to help.
Take a spoonful of Honey now and then.
Tomorrow go buy some Olive Leaf Extract from Whole Foods Market or Vitamin Shoppe.

Well I went to the ER once, for what I thought was strep, but that's because I got there 2 minutes too late and the lab closed on me (I just went in for a strep test). It turns out I had mono :\

Most cities should have some sort of after-hours clinic that would likely be faster than the ER. Those types of places usually tend to stay open until about 11p or 12a.

Get some rest. Strep sucks and you feel like shit, but it wont kill you. Just stay hydrated. People with sore throats have a tendency to drink too little water.
