"Hope you learned your lesson" is a little bit odd to say when it sounds like she wasn't careless at all with it... locked with a padlock in a locker? Seems like she had a pretty reasonable expectation that it was safe.

She brought it to school...that's pretty careless.

I wouldn't let my kid bring something that expensive to school.

I told my daughter she absolutely was not taking hers to school at any time. She thought I was a monsterous dickhead and ranted for days. Then her friend's iPhone was stolen (who the F gives an 11 year old kid an iPhone anyway)... haven't heard a peep out of her since.

I'd rather her think I'm a dick now than deal with how she would feel if it was stolen later.

Did you file a police report and report it to school authorities?
Was it purchased with a cc that offers purchase protection ?

One would need a bolt cutter to break a combination lock or the actual combination. I would pursue this with the authorities as there is a thief in that school.

It's pretty easy to watch someone putting in the combination on a combo lock and the turn pattern is always the same, so it's not that inconceivable that she was showing it off to her friends and someone watched her put in her combo and then stole it after she left the locker room.

Either way, it was irresponsible of her to bring it to school and irresponsible of her parents to let her bring it to school.

Most schools have policies against those kind of devices anyway.

I'd write it off as lost, cause you're not going to get any help from the school getting it back.

Sorry OP, I don't mean to be rude or thread-crap but why does a 14yr old need such an expensive phone?, I still use a Samsung flip-phone that works fine(well, except for texting anyway). If it get lost, stolen, damaged it's $25 for a new one. Apple products are always targets for low-life's, the first day she brought it to school the baddies took notice..

google iTouch so you know what one is and edit your post.

This is why I do not put a PIN code on my devices. I want to encourage the thief to keep using it. That way, I can successfully track it with the FindMyiPod service.

www.icloud.com

Log-in with her Apple ID. Locate.

[edit]
If its unlocked, and the thief is using it, DO NOT tip-off the thief with a message or remotely-added PIN. DO NOT remote-wipe if you want any chance to get it back (unless there is sensitive stuff on there and you and keeping it away from other people is worth more to you than the cost of the iPod). Change all passwords for email and Facebook. For services that give you the option, reset session IDs for cookies that keep your device logged-in (Facebook and Google let you do this). DO NOT change the Apple ID password. I'm not sure, but I think it would block you from tracking your device.

I just tried the locate last night and today and says no device found.

Combo locks pop open easily. Tie something to the lock and yank down hard.

Am I still in control of my Itouch after its wipe? I would like to keep erasing it while the thief has it.

Seriously I share your sentiment. The agreement was she should keep it with her at all times. Hindsight but now I am kicking myself for being dumb and asking what was I thinking. Got too many things on my mind lately with a son just went off to college, work and home life.

A teenager bringing an i-device to school is basically the same thing as walking around with a sign on their neck saying "rob me".

On a positive note, at least she's learned a lesson out of this earlier on in life, versus having it cost her much more later on.

In my experience as a child, whenever you get some shiny new gadget you use it proudly. Drawing attention to yourself by showing what you have is a great way to have someone set you up so they can steal your shit.

Nobody is going to go through all that trouble just to break into her locker if they didn't know she had the thing.

Lets see...I had to learn the hard way.

5th Grade: Gameboy stolen
5th Grage: Gamebody Advanced stolen
7th: PSP
8th: phone
9th: phone
10th: iPod

So yea, people suck.

Negative. Once it's wiped the association is broken and there's nothing else you can do.

I remember someone at my school opening my locker by just punching it really hard with their hand. Then I realized how my shit all got stolen. Was just a bunch of books but it was annoying as hell :(

I don't want to sound like a dick here, but do you think there's a chance she lost it or broke it and is giving you this story to save face?

Seems like every kid on our town over the age of 12 or 13 has a smartphone, and while they are not supposed to use them in class, there is no policy against having them in the school. This is in suburban New Jersey.

Those Master locks that kids buy for lockers aren't that hard to break, but breaking one would be a noisy affair. Of course, locker rooms are noisy anyway. I would tend to think it was someone who either was told the combination, or watched her open the lock, or the lock was possibly left open.

Please point me to the part of that page where it says "itouch"

Of course it doesn't. :whiste:

Hopefully you're not confusing this discontinued product, Logitech iTouch Keyboard.

With the OPs daughters stolen item, which they incorrectly called iTouch 4G (iPod Touch 4th Generation).

Yeah I just called my son who graduated iat the same school and he said that pe lockers, when he was there, always get broken in. Apparently those combo lock are easy to breach using a soda can. Thanks son for warning me after the fact. :)

She won't give me another story because she has been upset since yesterday. It also made sense since there were break ins just last month and her best friend was the victim.

Anyway pops, let this sink in so that she really embraces and feels how awful this is. Then leave a new 4th gen on her pillow. She'll remember that as fondly as how awful she feels having it taken.
