It was actually retch- and gag-inducing.

So I spilled an entirely full mug of hot chocolate all over my fiancé's keyboard the other night, which basically forced him to clean out his keyboard that's barely been dusted for the last 6 years, much less sprayed out with compressed air or anything.

I took a few photos, stuck them on Picasa:

It was the most vile thing I've had to deal with in a while.

What was particularly nasty was the odd smell of chocolate and... rot and old body odors or something like that, wafting up from the keyboard bed. Bleugh.

how do you get keys off? my keyboard is disgusting and could use a good cleaning

Pry the first couple of them off with a flat screwdriver (I started with the tilda, the tab, and the caps lock), and then you can just use your fingertips to pull the rest of them off.

Pulling at an angle helps. Keys are usually sturdier than they appear, and they will make horribly loud, unnerving, cracking noises as they come out.

why not dishwasher?

The water here is full of weird minerals and strange stuff---it leaves a grimy residue on almost everything that comes out of the dishwasher. It didn't seem like a good idea....

HTF can you let a keyboard get that bad? I've used the same keyboard for 3-4 years and it doesn't have hair and chunks of ish in it.. I could see maybe a little grime/film on the keys themselves but wtf are you people doing, using your keyboard as a damn bib or something?

Guys, there's no point in cleaning a keyboard unless its some specialty model. Buy a new one.

That's what I told him, but he likes the weird creaking noises it makes when he types. Yes---the keys actually squeak when they're depressed. The keyboard is a total piece of crap as far as I'm concerned, but it's not mine to throw away. Unfortunately. 😛

He has a tendency to eat while he's at the computer. The hair chunks, though... I have no explanation for. I dust out my own system about once every 2 months, keyboard included, so everything that I own is spotless. 😛
