Don't worry, NO ONE is stupid enough to leave their car idling after 10 minutes with no sign of movement.

I used to have a 50 mile each way commute. I think the longest it ever took was about three hours, doing 10 - 15mph in a snowstorm. During the winter it wasn't uncommon for me to spend 4-5 hours a day in the car.

Wow, that commute sucks. While traffic in the D.C. area is nothing to write home about, it has never taken me over 2 hours to get home - well, except for one time in a snowstorm. I guess I'm going to nix the 3-4 month assignment that I've been offered in Chicago. Sounds like the traffic isn't too hot.

It all depends on what part of town you're in. The absolute worst part of the city for traffic is probably in the Des Plaines/Rosemont area, those 2 suburbs are right by Ohare airport and there is always steady traffic. However some of the western and southern suburbs are'nt bad traffic wise.

Longest it's ever taken me to get to work (all just part-time jobs near where I've lived) is about 20 minutes probably. Longest it ever took me to get to school was around 2 hours to go about 5 miles. Big ice storm one morning and for some reason, no sand got put down at all.

Traffic here would be a lot better if you goddamn VA drivers weren't so keen on rubbernecking over things like deer carcasses and tire changes.

it was the day of the NYC blackout. I was downtown by Wall Street working (due to the blackout, I ended up working until it got so dark we were worried about our safety). took a boat from NYC to Hoboken, walked 4 miles from Hoboken to where my car was parked, and then drove through bumper-to-bumper traffic for a few hours.

greatest day of work evar :) I swiped almost $400 in cash, and made another $100 in overtime.

Where did you "swipe" it from?

hmmm ... the worst commute for me was when I was in school at Dekalb IL, and working part time in Buffalo Grove IL. I got out of class by noon, it was snowwing, and there were lots of cars stugk in ditches. It took nearly 2 and 1/2 hours to got to work (normal commute time for me was about 1 hour if i averaged about 80 to 90 mph on teh expressways).

Longest commute since I've dropped out of college and gotten a good job, about 45 minutes due to road closures and traffic. (construction & rainstorm). Normal commutes are about 25-35min during rush hour, and when traffic is light, I can get there in 15-20 min.

I actually like my job too. yeay.

As soon as I get on the entrance ramp it started raining but fortunately traffic was light so for at least 10 minutes I was making good time. After that everything fell apart, apparently a truck with some kind of liquid or chemical jack-knifed across all three lanes of traffic. I was literally sitting still for more than 2 and a half hours. So I finally get past the friggin accident site, just in time for heavy rain and rush hour. By the time I got to work at 9:03 I had set a new record, 3 hours 53 minutes for a one way commute.
wow, is it really worth it?

thank god i live in the country. it only takes me 10 minutes to get to work, and there is barely any traffic.

It has taken me more than 3 hours in the past. Thank God I'm now done with the NYC commute.
