So I left my house this morning at 5:10, dropped my wife off at the train station and headed to the expressway. As soon as I get on the entrance ramp it started raining but fortunately traffic was light so for at least 10 minutes I was making good time. After that everything fell apart, apparently a truck with some kind of liquid or chemical jack-knifed across all three lanes of traffic. I was literally sitting still for more than 2 and a half hours. So I finally get past the friggin accident site, just in time for heavy rain and rush hour. By the time I got to work at 9:03 I had set a new record, 3 hours 53 minutes for a one way commute.

Never more than an hour or so. People never really seem to wreck on the way to work. It's that ride home that's turned into a 6 hour "vacation" on 635E before.

Before this incident about a year ago it took me 2 hours and 40 something minutes to get to work. I used to live near an area with a lot of trains and unbelievable as it sounds about 30 cars including myself got caught between 2 railroad crossings. Trains on both crossings had stalled for almost 2 hours so all I could was sit around til one of the trains cleared the track. I think there was some kind of electrical failure or something.

used to work 20miles away, which took 2hrs max before due to a major accident (semi was hanging over a freeway junction); it usually takes 30mins. Now, work is 15mi away and takes 20mins.

Ugh! If I ever encountered a situation that it took me THAT long to get to work I'd just turn around (assuming it was possible) and go work from home.

My drive's about 20 miles each way. It usually takes ~20 minutes in in the morning, ~30 minutes in the evening. The worst I ever encountered here was when we had a relatively mild ice storm a few years ago. Since it's the South, people don't know how to drive in it and there's hardly any equipment to help with the road conditions. So there were wrecks all over the place. An hour and a forty minutes into it I was only halfway to work so I said screw it and turned into a nearby mall and killed a couple hours before finally heading in. From now on in situations like that I'm just going to work from home rather than deal with traffic.

Almost five hours, going from Barrie, ON to Markham, ON (Woodbine and 14th)

It was snowing, so the people in Markham panicked, not quite understanding that the soft white stuff falling from the sky means you shouldn't drive at their regular Mach 2.

Of course, to top it all off, when I manage to amke it into the office, they say I can go home if I wanted.... my butt didn't relish the thought of sitting for another 5 hours, so i politely declined, and went to work...

almost 7 hours to get home from work one day.

it was the day of the NYC blackout. I was downtown by Wall Street working (due to the blackout, I ended up working until it got so dark we were worried about our safety). took a boat from NYC to Hoboken, walked 4 miles from Hoboken to where my car was parked, and then drove through bumper-to-bumper traffic for a few hours.

greatest day of work evar :) I swiped almost $400 in cash, and made another $100 in overtime.

Arkitech,

What part of Chicago are you in? I happened to look at the news this morning briefly to see that the tri state was backed up from the 83rd street toll plaza to almost I-80. I neglected to take the expressway and took backroads instead. That wasn't too bad, but with many more people avoiding the expressway, it was still very heavy.

Probably 15 minutes, there was a rollover accident on the street I take to drive to the restaurant where I work so I had to drive a block around it.
