I just started running again yesterday, after not doing any running for like 8 months. Well, its only jogging really.

I went out for about ~15 minutes today and then when I came home, I wanted to see how far I ran, so I took my truck and checked the distance on the odometer. 2.2km (1.3 miles).

Work it out and that is 11.5 minutes per mile. Damn I'm slow.

**Update**

I can now do that 1.3 miles in 11 minutes, so thats 8.5 minutes per mile. I'm getting better :)

Met a guy a couple weeks ago (he's a friend of my boss) who's training for the Olympics as a marathoner. He's AVERAGING about 5 min./mile for a marathon! :Q

I can run 3 miles at about 5.5 miles per hour. Of course, I have asthma and only about 65% of the lung capacity of a normal person, so that's pretty good for me.

that's not bad. i started running again a few weeks ago. alittle under 8 1/2 minutes a mile (over 2.1 miles). going 3.2 miles, it skyrockets to 9 minutes a mile. personally, i think it's a decent pace. i'm probably faster now than when i was in grammer school running the yearly 1 mile in P.E. god i dreaded that.. seemed like such a long distance. I can do a single mile in ~7 minutes.

keep up the good work. no pain no gain. :)

5 min/mile is insane. i dont think i'll ever be that fast.. especially over long distances..

You're better off just walking briskly for the time being. You'll get just as good of a workout without putting any where near as much stress on your joints, muscles, and connective tissues.

Once you have a decent amount of stamina built up from walking briskly start doing some interval training alternating between running and walking(where's amused and his couch to 5k program? :))

Training for something? Or to go somewhere? :)

Up north, the requirement is 2.4k in under twelve. Exceptional is under ten-thirty.

So what is more important when running?

I run close to 2 miles on different levels of incline (between 0-2) at about 5.5 miles an hour. I do this almost everyday but as you can imagine my time for a mile is close to 11min. So my question is what is more important? running everyday consistently or running fast every other day on zero incline.

Oh I also lift after running but that is every other day.

You'll get faster, just make sure you keep going. I am averaging 6 min a mile, and run 1-4 miles a day. I'm 5'8" and ~185lbs. You really should be able to pick up the pace pretty quick.

In all seriousness I walk a mile in 13minutes. Jog in 8-10. So don't worry about it. Work your way to running 2 miles, jogging 4-5, and walking 6-10. I don't recommend doing them all at the same time though. :p

Get some runners insoles too, trust me.

Even the worst track runners run a 2-mile in that time....well, except for the one kid at regionals last night...19:30. You're not the only slow one out there. ;)

Run too fast at the start and you will end up with shin splints, so keep it slow. After a couple weeks you will find yourself speeding up without even knowing it. Try jogging about 3/4 of your distance at the start, then walk the rest in order to cool down.

(the fact that you are even jogging beats a slow time if you ask me)

umm, wow, that's kinda pathetic.. I WALK 1.5 miles in 15 minutes.. but keep it up, I'm sure you'll improve :D

In high school track I ran a 4:55 mile (1600m), and a 11:07 two-mile (3200m). I trained for a marathon from January through March of 2003, but I had to quit training because it was too stressful and was hurting my grades (2+ hours of running per day).

Just giving you something to work for. :D

Back in middle school gym, I did a mile in 7.5 minutes... I thought that was pretty slow... but I've never taken up running again... I'm sure I'd be pretty slow considering I don't have much endurance, even with hockey. :| Damn asian genes.
