Rumors have it that there will be a budget cut at my company, that means time for some people to be laid off. Obviously, they will be letting people with high salary go first. That means me and a couple of my colleagues. Nothing is for certain, but will someone point me to the unemployment line just in case. :(

Obviously those with high salary??? So is the CEO getting fired? I think that statement only applies if the person who has a high salary is obviously over-payed for their job...

Actually, the CEO is not the highest paid at our company. And no, I wouldn't say me and my colleagues are over-payed for our jobs. We are in the development department, so basically we are carrying the whole company in terms of production. But since there are no new business coming in they only need the maintenance department to service the existing clients until they go under I guess. We knew it would come down to this sooner or later. Don't know for sure that they will be letting us go or not though in case business picks up again. I don't think they want to burn the bridges, so they may just cut our hours down or something.

Theoretically they could let the whole development department go and just have the maintenance department service the existing clients forever.

nah, they won't be able to sustain on servicing existing clients alone.

wanna trade for a low-paying job?
depends how much your pay is compared to my unemployment check :) if it's not significant higher, I'll just take a long vacation instead.

If you don't live life at the pay you make you will be fine.

Very good advice and I'm sure others who have lived through a recession or 2 also will agree :S

Yep. I spent 6.5 months in happy unemployment last year. I'm glad it didn't happen later in life because it taught me some great financial skills which I can take into the rest of my life. Somebody else I was speaking to who lost their job said the same thing, that it totally changed their view on money.

Well according to the current class envy that seems to thrive here, you deserve every bad thing that occurs to you if you are one of "the rich."

Thats the price you pay for being the man and repressing everyone else.

Just make sure you have a nice golden parachute setup for your new stint with unemployment like I did and youll be fine. When I was laid off from a job I had in Orlando Fla in march of 2000, I cashed out my 401k with that company and put 1/2 of it into my current 401, then took the other 1/2 and bought 500 shares of Krispy Kreme stock.

Only thing sweeter than their donuts, is their stock.

I don't know if a Federal or State law but I know that here in California if you "touch" your 401K money you have to pay 20% to Uncle Sam right off the top. You have to roll the whole thing into another account to avoid the tax.

I don't know what you are trying to say with the "class envy". But I am by no mean "rich" as you would put it. Everyone who puts their mind to it are able to get to where I am.. it's called "an education". I don't get to where I am by scheming up some outrageous plan to cheat people off their money. I actually do honest work in software development and actually pull money in for the company in the hay days.

Well, since my future income is uncertain at this point.. I think I'll just get one of each. But you, felixlee.. you should get both on your high bankroll.

Well if you're all that don't worry, you'll be fine. And if you're not you'll find out. Unemployment can be a humbling and educational experience. Just make sure you're open to learn with it.

It basically means everyone who makes less money than you do pretty much thinks if something bad happens to you....you deserved it.

According to most government figures, if you make over $60,000 a year, you are one of the despised filthy rich.

Unless you live in the SF Bay Area (Cali), where $60K puts you just about at the poverty line.

You are of course assuming the government would apply common sense to the equation. If you are making that money, the government thinks you are rich, regardless of where you live.
