>"oh neat, 2.5" SAS server" Then I look at the HD boxes, "crap, slow junky SATA drives, this will never work."

IIRC, SATA drives work on a SAS controller, but SAS drives do not work on a SATA controller. Not that I've ever touched SAS hardware.

First Google result seems to agree, though:

>The SAS connector is a universal interconnection that is form-factor compatible with SATA. It allows SAS or SATA drives to plug directly into a SAS environment

Somehow I deal with the same problem every few weeks. The salespeople at my company sell servers and ship them for me to setup. I open the box and go "oh neat, 2.5" SAS server" Then I look at the HD boxes, "crap, slow junky SATA drives, this will never work." I get on the phone and get blamed for opening the boxes before inspecting what was shipped. Then the salesperson claims wrong item shipped. Then it becomes my problem to get the correct drives.

uh, SATA drives work just fine on a SAS controller.

Coming from 'playstation3' with 9 posts?

Backup evidence please?

I'm not saying you're totally wrong, just that you're not giving us anything and don't have much credibility here...

I guess there is no possible way to confirm such knowledge, so I defer to all previous posters. SATA does not work with SAS. oh the humanity.

Is it just me or did you directly contradict yourself there?

'SATA drives work just fine on a SAS controller'

'SATA does not work with SAS'

He's mocking you.

If I remember correctly, the SAS controller on the Proliant DL's do supports both SATA and SAS drives.

Yup, it's confirmed...

This is why you're supposed to write your system configurations for server in detail, and then give your boss a list of EVERY SINGLE PART that needs to be ordered for each system.

Assume that your boss will always make the WRONG choice if they need to make a hardware decision, and then you'll be in the right mindset.

SATA <> Server unless it's just a light load file server for less than 20 users.

Ehhh - our secondary (i.e. relatively lightly used) SAN is SATA drives because of the cost differential.

are you storing files or booting virtuals from SAN?

If storing, then no, it does not make a big difference.
