I don't see the problem - why depend on someone else when you can do it yourself? Its taking another factor out of the equation, not insulting IT.

Well, we IT folks are by nature undependable assholes. I wouldn't want to depend on me either.

Also still need IT to generate the report for them... at least based on the people I used to work with.

It's not that I feel insulted.

My problem with it is that we spend a considerable amount of time and effort trying to get users to rely on us - after all, we are the experts. In spite of that, we still get the regular pack of idiots who think they know better than us, and install, uninstall, tweak, destroy, rape, and pillage everything on their pcs. Then they want us to fix it when it won't play hackware they downloaded from Kazaa. So you now have Crystal encouraging this behavior.

In my experience, the clients (from my jobs) that I've talked to complain about their IT and wanted to use our company(software) to provide all services including IT just so they could avoid going through their own IT department. These weren't small companies or institutions either. So, I can understand why Crystal Reports is offering that service.

Everyone bitches about their IT department until they need something fixed, then you're their favorite person in the whole entire world!

Understood. However, this isn't really in the same line as installing kazaa, and if anything by having crystalreports essentially do some of the work for you, it lightens the load on the IT department.

They'll soon come running when they can't work out how to do anything with it. One of my clients is laughingly called a "marketing manager" and he's the stupidest gimp I've ever had to deal with. I'm amazed he can walk in a straight line or his brain doesn't get overloaded when he tries to talk and walk at the same time.

Not being an IT person, I would say that not having to deal with IT people is great. One day, when the world is perfect, IT won't even exist. It will be called "The Golden Age" where it won't take 2 months for me to get vizio installed on my desktop... Oh I dream.

Rarely can we even get something installed on our desktops here. If we're so lucky, we'll be granted to a remote server that has it installed already if we think we need it. After filling out a huge form online and receiving approval from 4 different managers and legal, of course.

IT will always be necessary in our world though. Far too many idiots out there.

Again, what bugs me about these threads is people associate the helpdesk with IT. In some corporations they are "under" (org chart) IT, but setting up printers and fixing issues with PCs is not Information Technology.

Using the term IT when referring to the help desk is just being ignorant.

I kid, I kid. I was a CS major and got very used to ripping on the IST majors...its all in good fun.

Doesn't bother me. I have more than enough IT duties to keep my days full. That's one less hassle for me.

How the hell would I know, I've been waiting since early November to actually get it.

my company is a major defense contractor, EVERYTHING here is that locked down. If I were in a classified building (which I will be, if my clearance ever goes through) I won't even have an internet or outside phone line.

IT Departments outsource a number of services and this is just another option. IT would still need to be heavily involved in implementing this solution and probably maintaining it.

My car displays information on the dashboard, does a mechanic practice IT?
My TV displays information, does a TV repair guy practice IT?
My computer displays information, does a computer repair guy (IE Help Desk) practice IT?

Actually as an "IT" person (sorry, I'm a desktop support person, I apparently don't get the honor of being called "IT" is "Computer Janitor" acceptable?) the worst thing is having to depend on other "IT" people for anything. I've been waiting for our Pointsec Administrator to get the data off of a machine for me for two weeks and getting the run-around the entire time ("Oh, sorry, I'll get on it now," "Oh sorry, I was at a meeting." Blah blah blah). Meanwhile the user who the machine belongs to thinks I'm a douche who isn't bothering to get anything done for her.
