I work as an IT monkey. I always stick to company policy to cover my butt. :)

same here.

We were taken over by another company a little while back. before that, passwords did not expire, so everyone had the same password for years. with the new company, they make you change it every 90 days. during the transition, this one guy was missed and his password was never set to expire. I set it so that it does on his next log in.

you'd have thought I'd burned down his house, banged his wife, and killed his dog when he found out he had to change it.

hah, same reaction we had when we forced all desktops to lock after 10 minutes of inactivity and didn't allow them to change their screensaver from the default logon.scr

we have that too, except ours is 20 minutes. that's a big complaint too.

Funny you should mention that. Less than 2 weeks after the 10 minute implementation we had so many managers whining we had to up it to 20 minutes.

Yap. I'm an IT guy and unless they're part of the Exec groups, my priorities are a bit determined by the user's attitude.

I had a lot of people complain that the computers were locking before 10 minutes was up. I had them time the duration and it hit 10 minutes on the nose every time. If it weren't for our auditors I probably would have had to increased it to 20 minutes as well.

In users' defense, some IT personnel have that outlook as well though and treat users as if they're dumb when it's really just ignorance. Ignorance is fine in this situation because it's not their job to understand everything related to IT.

Very true.. but when you call me to say there is a problem and 15 minutes later I discover through interrogating you that the problem is the power is out?!? I'm sorry... but your just plain stupid.

I started having trouble with my machine so I gave him a ring, he came over and dragged off my workstation. After looking it over he decided it was time to reimage it. During the image he just happened to use the older image that the company has, which just happens to allow me to have local admin rights. He just happened to install office 2003 (I can't stand 2007). And he just happened to bring buy some girl scout cookies to share which he keeps stashed in a little fridge under his desk.

It pays to be nice to your IT guy. This made my day, which is kind of sad but I've been so ticked off about not having local admin rights.

That's the gayest shit i've ever heard.

Hehe... I used to work at a mortgage company when they did the same thing. So I found the screen saver I wanted. Renamed it to default.scr then renamed the original default.scr to default_o.scr. Everyone thought I hacked my computer.

My few short years in helpdesk taught me two things:

1. If they are mean, don't go out of your way to support them.
2. If they are nice, don't trust them.

There are exceptions to the rules, but there are so many sneaky people that lie to you about why they need new blackberries or why they think they need the new laptop model that its just not worth dealing with. It pays to be nice to your IT guy, maybe, but not enough that I let down my guard and hook you up with all the latest and greatest.

BUT IF YOU HAVE COOKIES?!?!? OMG WHAT DO YOU WANT? DUAL SCREENS!? NEW WIRELESS KEYBOARD!?!? WHATEVER JUST BRING ME TREATS!!!!

Um, there is a converter. Its called the compatibility pack. I'd hope it would be part of the image. Maybe you already know this and you were just trying to make a joke... I hope so.

the worst is when they complain about a problem and you come to fix and they say they don't have time to let you work on it, but yet they continue to bitch about the problem.
its like they expect you to just wave a magic wand over teir pc and the problem magically goes away.
