It is a great job, but usually you have more responsibilities than just "webmaster". You are usually part of the company's IT department and as it works out, maintaining the website is sort of "extra work" that you squeeze in between everything else.

Now if you maintain an e-commerce site, you probably have full time work keeping the site going.

Nope. If you run a hosting company you deal with many clients who have no idea how the intraweb works, and want to blame you for every stupid thing that they do or forget to do (like backups).

My brother has mostly shut down his hosting for others since the money was not worth the hassle compared to his other work.
