Any such jobs out there? I'm tired of being a help desk monkey and the stupidity, pettiness, and contradictions of users and management.

No matter where you go in IT somehow, someway a user will get to you. Be a sys admin. Oh everything is a server problem. Be a network admin/engineer. Oh everything is a network problem. Be the head of IT. Every problem is your problem. ;)

You climb the ladder in any company with either knowledge or ass kissing. Take your pick, go to school or pucker up.

even if you're a programmer the people will change requirements on you expecting that the change on your side will be simple... and what's worse is that you just spent all that time & effort to get it working the way they wanted it before.

There's a lot of jobs that suck 10x more that helpdesk. I pulled cable and fiber optics for years before i moved into a helpdesk job. I was so glad to be in a clean professional environment where I didn't need my hard hat and piss in stinking don-jons anymore. whenever I feel my sysadmin job suck, I just think back to those days...

You've basically described any business. Whether you're in IT, marketing, legal or anything else, you're going to face the same basic problems in communication.

That said, you can isolate yourself a little. In a few words: Get out of support! Get off the front lines and you don't have people shooting at you. Unfortunately, if your specialties are in support, then you have a bit of a problem. Even the most senior network administrators have to deal with trouble tickets, and that's going to be the source of frustration for you.

In my opinion, the best you can do is get to a higher tier of support so that the nonsense doesn't make it to you unless you have a defined scope.

No matter what profession you are in there is always someone who has no idea about your job and will not have the patience to understand. There will always be someone who is not trained in the same way as you that insists they know your job just as good as you.

I think what you are looking for is to be in a position where you don't deal directly with customers/users.

Aside from that... if you don't have the patience to help people whose personalities clash with yours, then you should seek employment where you can be picky about who you help... ie: Freelance work, private consulting, contract work.
