Both abuses have been completely blown out of proportion. This is becoming a media driven war.
Four dead mercenaries don't mean much in the long scheme of things, and a dozen naked Iraqis mean even less. But it's effecting the decisions of our military and morale of our troops disproportionately.

Now it looks as if the abuse incidents became big news BECAUSE the Army wanted to kick some ass. From the New York Times:

Mr. Lawson said he sent letters to 17 members of Congress about the case earlier this year, with virtually no response, and that he ultimately contacted Mr. Hackworth's Web site out of frustration, leading him to cooperate with a consultant for "60 Minutes II."

"The Army had the opportunity for this not to come out, not to be on 60 Minutes," he said. "But the Army decided to prosecute those six G.I.'s because they thought me and my family were a bunch of poor, dirt people who could not do anything about it. But unfortunately, that was not the case."

I kinda suspected COL David "I never disciplined one of my soldiers in Korea for executing 4 POWs after making the prisoners dig their own graves" Hackworth had some connection to the news leak.

Why is it that saying "I'm proud to be an American!" used so often as a balm? I had thought that rampant nationalism was not always desirable.

Stupid. Why should I want to destroy a country I live in? I want it to be better than it is, and actually live up to all the high-sounding, though utterly empty, rhetoric.

It isn't about "good and evil." Every nation, including this one, is more than capable of embodying both extremes and every state in between. What it is about is leaving other nations alone unless they pose a DIRECT threat to us. Even a flag-waver like YOU should be able to see the OBVIOUS benefits in THAT.

This may come as an ugly surprise to you, but it IS possible for us to live safely and well without CONSTANTLY focking around in the affairs of other nations.

I feel the same way but have a complete different reaction. What makes this country great, in my opinion is that you are free here it hate it. That's why I love it. I'm free to burn the flag so I have no desire or need to. Because we feel like the worst in the world, inside, and hide that from ourselves, any criticism feels like death. But there is nothing really wrong with you except that thinking there is makes us do weird things, denial type things that come round and bite us in the ass. Nothing touched my man is ever going to be perfect so criticism is vital as car polish is to your car.

Yes, having the freedom to critisize the government and elected officials is a wonderful thing. Having the freedom to critisize idiots who immigrate to this country and try to tear it down is a great thing to.

My grandfather immigrated from Sicily when he was 11 not speaking a word of English.

That didn't stop him from graduating from Columbia medical school and doing his residency at Johns Hopkins.

I never heard him bash America.
