"it is now safe to turn off the computer" and nothing

I just installed win2000 and when I turn off the computer I get to the screen saying "it is now safe to turn off the computer" but the computer doesn't turn itself off unlike my other computers. Any suggestions to a resolution.

Really I find that mine shutsdown but I still have to shut my monitor off by turning off my surge protector so I'm really not gaining anything by having it shut down automaticly

the power off on the mobo is not plug and play so that's why. for new mobo's you don't have that. maybe if you update the bios or windowsupdate it will work.

I'm not sure if this works for Windows 2000, but it just might.
Check out this site - Windows XP Shutdown Troubleshooter - and click "Powerdown Issues" in the left frame. Read the explanation, and try it out.

Chances are your system is setup as "standardPC" and not ACPI.
Try this...
Right click on the desktop, -> properties -> screensaver, -> Power -> now find the APM checkbox in one of the tabs, then hit apply. Now it should shut down just fine.

Sorry i can't remember the exact tab it's on, all my home systems are setup like that, i just don't happen to be home right now.

in agreement with BreakAPart, your computer is not set to be ACPI compliant. to verify, go to device manager and the first section is "computer type" or something similar. this should either say "standard computer" or "ACPI computer". dont have the bookmark at school to point you how to enable it, but since it changes the way IRQs are shared (many people disable it for this reason), you would prolly have to enable it when you set up windows installation to get the full conflict-free setup.

I don't have this problem but one of my friends does. I can not find anything that says APM or ACPI on my puter. 😕

Your not going to find that setting...it only appears as an option AFTER ACPI has been disabled-your computer is still using ACPI. Once ACPI is disabled the APM option appears as a tab under power management, with the selection "Enable Advanced Power Management support" Check your friends computer it should be there.

I had the exact same problem and I found the link above before reading this and I tried the following and it worked great.

When Windows XP won?t powerdown automatically, the APM/NT Legacy Power Node may not be enabled. To enable this, right-click on the My Computer icon, click Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | View. Check the box labeled ?Show Hidden Devices.? If it?s available on your computer, there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. Try enabling it and see if this resolves the powerdown problem. (Tip from Terri Stratton.)

Yes, I found the apm setting and enabled it and the shutdown problem is gone.
