It is NOT your PC.

Yes it is assigned to you but it is NOT your computer.

You did not shell out $4000 for the laptop, the memory upgrade, extra charger, extra battery, docking station, 19" monitor, and travel bag. Pay for it out of your own pocket and then you own it. Feel free to trash it however you want.

Since it is NOT your computer, you have no right to install your own personal software. I don't care if you want to use Quicken to balance your checkbook on the crapper. The company does not pay a bunch of techs to figure out why the bank didn't credit you that $2 coupon from Stop and Shop. Don't get pissed when I uninstall any software that is not COMPANY STANDARD.

You are SOL if you your personal software messes up your computer. You don't call the fire department when your cat pisses on the floor so don't call me when "MYST" corrupts your hard drive.

Yes that network card is great for the company network but it's property of the IT department and NOT you. So do not use it for DSL, Cable, or any other sort of home internet providor. If it hoses your company setting, you automatically goto the BOTTOM of the list. The help desk people can hardly handly daily volume without some moron being cheap and wanting to save a few bucks.

If you do have problems with you ISP, don't you dare call anyone on my team. Please don't get pissed at them just because they don't know the settings that some cable TV technician used. We pay lots of good money for help desk people that pick up in two rings. I don't care if @Home leaves you on hold for 2 hours. You pay $19.99 a month so expect that level of service.

Your computer/notebook is a work tool. It is assigned to you to make your more productive and NOT to show off to your friend and neighbors. It is your responsibilty to make sure it is safe at all time. We are not responsible for incedental damage caused due to:

Uncle Jed dropping it into a swimming pool.
Little Tammy using it for a frisbee.
Fido using it for a chew toy.
Big Aunt Bertha mistaking it for a Wheat Thin.
Leaving it on the front seat of you car when parked in a neighborhood that resembles downtown Beirut in 1985.

Should your PC meet it's demise from any of the above fashion, we are NOT authorized to assign you another PC within 30 minutes. You have already proven that you cannot be trusted with a computer. It is your problem if the replacement PC is a Speak N Spell since you had your chance with the nice PC and blew it.

I do not care if you do not like flat black. We do not buy PCs because they match you damn socks (That is for loser companies). The PC is for work and aesthetics doesn't matter. if you don't like the design, bitch to IBM and not me or my team.

A 6 - 10GB drive is more than enough for the average sales drone. I refuse to upgrade you to a 20GB hard drive simply because you want a place to store your MP3s and pr0n. Shell out your own money and put on your home PC. Did I mention you get one warning to take that stuff off your PC? I sure as hell don't want to be filling out the paperwork from HR after they can your sorry ass.

Rant over.

Hail to the king baby.

2 laptops destroyed by coffee last week.
3 systems reformated due to end users loading their own crap software.
1 end user going out and buying his own system without telling his manager and going completely out of spec (he go bye bye).

heh if I see AOL 6.0 installed on one more fscking workstation I am going to go postal.....execution should be a viable alternative to firing.

Woohoo! Go Windogg go!

and warcleric, gotta agree withyou completely.. I hate aol 6.0

When working with a lot of our customers who use aol, its amazing the stuff it does and interferes with. it will even knock out our printers to the point where the customer has to uninstall 6.0 and reinstall 5.0 just to be able to use their $500 printer.. heh

WIndogg:

Your company is lucky to have you. My wife works for a major company in Cambridge area and the PC support people generally suck. I know more and I am NOT a computer jock but I don't dare touch her laptop or install non-standard software.

I laughed when they were stuck trying to get a dual boot Win NT/95 system to work!!!!!!!!

ROFL! 😀

<< Uhhhh...why dont u set it so they cant install any software? >>

Already done w/ Windows NT4 and Windows 2K Pro but a pain in the ass when you combine Novell, Windows 98, and company software that constatly needs to be patched.

Heheh.. Where I used to work, a guy brought in his son's computer because he couldn't get Rogue Spear to work and asked us to fix it up. Took me about an hour to figure out why the crappy Compaq was crashing everytime you loaded the game up. Turned off the movies and played the game for another two hours to 'make sure it was stable.' Talk about non-standard software..

The things you do to keep VP's happy..

Talk about reading my mind on some days, "but it's my pc just tell me why my copy of photosuite from home is trying to open word files" thanks I'm busy come back later.

Thanks everyone. Just had to get it out. Seems some idiot was telling everyone "we lost our data lines" which was a complete lie. Soon the calls start pouring in. Of course this idiot's DSL services uses static IPs while we use dynamic IPs. I DSL people used the internal NIC in the notebook which means all company settings got hosed. The classic response was, "Uhhhh.... nooooo..... I didn't do it....."

Yea right.

I went to a office the other day where they said "you screwed up the email somehow from where you are" which happens to be about 8 miles away from them. I drive over and they have installed aol on top of the proxy settings I had in there, and I checked the email settings in outlook at they replaced all the pop info with name@aol.com, ugh.

My personal favorite is when people call, "I'm having problems with AIM, could you send a tech down to look at it for me." Or, "I'm trying to listen to the baseball game over realaudio and its not working, please send a tech asap." Will do. When hell freezes over! :|

I've never done tech support or supported a help desk, however, I feel if you know what you're doing, why NOT install your own software? I mean as long as you aren't using it on company time, and the laptop DOES help you to be productive outside the office and you KNOW how to use it properly as to not screw anything up then what's the problem? Anyhow, I have Administrator privileges on my own laptop and am glad my company trusts me enough not to have such silly restrictions. I have a very small hard drive (4gb) and am perfectly happy with the 30 or 40 mp3's I keep on here.
