I'd fundamentally disagree with the OP.

They're simply different ends of the same spectrum, fiddling with crap, breaking stuff that works fine already, and generally enjoying yourself ;)

Agreed. Though it's much harder to get into fiddling with cars if you don't have someone to teach you things first. Teaching yourself computer stuff is easy.

and it's far easier to fiddle w/ an old computer rather than a project car to learn on, heh

That too. I screwed up a few things here and there on my first pc however long ago, and I was able to just use my parents' computer. The story is a bit different when working on a car.

that too. i screwed up a few things here and there on my first car, and i was able to use my parents car to go get new parts.

not too different, and mebbe about as costly.

Except when you crack an engine block it's not quite the same as frying a CPU.

:p

You'd be surprised how little used long blocks can cost. It could be as little as a mid range CPU.

i know the ins and outs of computers...only know the major and some minor things about cars...i know all the different features/models/makes/options of cars, but dont know jack about the engine...

I don't know, is it your understanding?

I was just going to post this.

BTW, if that truly is your understanding, then you are not really understanding correctly.
I have definitely built more PCs than I have rebuilt engines, but I have been a shadetree mechanic for over 7 years now and working on PCs even longer. I also now live on a farm and have really taken a liking to farming as well. It is my understanding that making sweeping generalizations is great for some things, this happens to be one of the many where it does not.

I find that there are many similarities between the two disciplines. But car mechanic doesn't always mean car "nerd".

For example people on Hondatech know every configuration of parts for their honda and how many hp this part will add at this many RPM's, how much it costs, what to swap, new technologies and how everything functions, but they aren't necessarily good mechanics. Same could be said about some computer people as well.

Not to mention hardware != software side of the computers. I've met many web developers/gamers who don't really know model of their cpu.

i love em both. unfortunately, i don't have a garage, tools, spare cash and a spare car to go about fiddling with my wheels. so, i take it out on my pc.

the superiority of modern cars is obvious, but, the more refined technology sanitizes the experience. i entertain the idea of someday having a lotus 7 or cobra replica, sans transistors.

I love both, but see that computers in cars are a bad thing in one sense and they are good in another.

Meh, while there are certainly some knowledgeable posters there, most of the forum is either opinions of new cars coming out or fanboyism and irrelevant opinion. Not a whole lot of real tech info being swapped.

Ehh..most of my coworkers can care less about cars. They have no interest in driving a manual, or a car that handles well, etc..a few just want a car that gives them "balla" status (Acura TL).

I decided to go for the TSX because it was smaller, handled better, came with a 6spd manual even though I could've bought a more expensive heavy POS car..

Auto Mechanic for 20 years, built computers and fixed them for about 10.

One thing both have in common for me is I like to build race cars and go as fast as possible, and also like to overclock the living beejezus out of computers to run as fast as possible!
