Probably better luck in any of the non off-topic forums.

Apple forums might be best in terms of finding out if anything better is rumored to be coming out soon...

The reason I was considering it was:

Stable OS
The included apps like iphoto and garageband
I wanted something I can do easy video editing on.

I don't have an investment in propriety software really (windows only stuff)

I'm not a gamer past some flash games online. . .

Every O/S is stable. I don't know about Apple's proprietary apps. I've done pretty well without them so far. I've played around with OSX, and I haven't been impressed. If I didn't require game support, I'd use Ubuntu. I'm gonna try Debian on my next install to see what it's about.

I don't know if OS X Snow Leopard supports Windows 7 yet via boot camp, but is still a very nice mainstream computer (check out Apple refurbished store for like new product with manufacturer's warranty).

If you want to stay in the world of Windows, Dell Vostro 220 seems like nice choice (can often see nice deals, possibly including monitor, for around $400 price point; check out tech bargains dot com).

Not worth the price. You get a lot more computer when you get a PC than you do when buying a Mac. You get outdated hardware from a year or two ago and pay a premium for them.

Waiting for Chris and theflyingpig to post.

Welcome to the new millennium. XP, Vista, Win7, OSX, linux are all stable.

If you buy a mac, you are paying money for garage band and the other iCrap software. Buy a PC and you can buy something like Adobe Elements Photoshop/Premiere or audio software. Plus, there are a lot more freeware programs for the PC.

If you've got a ton of money, buying a Mac works fine. However, buying a Mac if you're on a budget is not a good idea. You can just get so much more computer if you buy a PC.
