It is 73 degrees here with a nice breeze and my neighbor's A/C just kicked on...

Turning on the AC when it is pleasant outside can make it far more pleasant inside without costing more than a few pennies. Why not spend a few pennies to be just absolutely perfect.

The real energy waste is people who want it absolutely perfect inside when it is 108°F outside or when it is -23°F outside. People like your neighbor who take it from near perfect to perfect spend almost nothing compared to doing that.

Perhaps. It was 74 in my house today but I had the windows open to allow the ocean breeze to blow right through my house. His back door is on the side and his kitchen is a giant greenhouse window facing southwest so that might raise temps quite a bit in his house.

My kitchen and family room also face southwest but I built a huge patio cover and planted shade trees about 7-8 years ago so the back of my house is better suited to take advantage of warmer days than his is.

BTW-It is 64 degrees right now. I love living here.

I keep my house at 71-73 everyday. We have a programmable thermostat that sets the temp at 76 when we leave for work, and then it sets it back to 73 when before we come home from work.

Our bill was $92 last month.

I am minding my own business. If I weren't I'd have gone over and knocked on his door.

As it is I'm just blogging to you pukes...and bragging about our lovely weather here. 😛

It's really cool down here in my home office with cross-ventilating windows but directly upstairs the master bedroom has little to no moving air... no 2nd windows so the A/C is on up there at night when a fan won't cut it.

Don't worry Jules, Obama is going to make sure he cuts that shit out. Then you can go back to minding your own business.

There could be a lot of heat-producing equipment in one room of the house where the thermostat is set. For instance, my home theater & PC generate more than enough heat to make the room hot even on a cool day. If I were in the room using them, you'd better believe I'd have the AC on vs working or relaxing in my own smell.

The couple that lives next door to me, who seem very normal in every way, never open their windows. A/C is on from the time it hits 70.

My wife is the first one to turn on our A/C. She'll turn it on when it's in the low 80s if there's like 100% humidity, most times though it has to hit the mid to upper 80s.

i would really like a thermostat that also regulated for humidity. 80 with low humidity is fine. 73 with high humidity sucks balls.

I concur.

After a week of high temp, high humidity days last week, it's actually tolerable today.

Maybe it's sunny? Maybe he has to keep the house closed up due to allergies? Maybe a closed up house on a 73 degree sunny day heats up quite a bit and needs cooling in the late afternoon?

[authoritarian econut]Naw, he's just a prick with a giant carbon footprint and Obama needs to raise his energy bills through taxes to teach him a lesson.[/authoritarian econut]

Nah, I know this guy pretty well. He smokes cigars regularly and is outside working on his car or doing yard work so I know he doesn't have allergies.

Who said anything about carbon footprint? Or prick? I actually like the guy and get along well with him. Put words in my mouth much?

Like I said, his house probably doesn't take advantage of the natural ocean breezes like mine does. They're also from Arizona originally so I think they are just used to having the house cold all the time from running the A/C.

My wife likes it really cold in the house. The middle of our house was mid 60s last night. When I went to bed the bedroom had to have been in the mid to high 50s.

We run ours pretty much anytime the temp is in the mid 60's or above. They no longer build houses with high ceilings and windows that facilitate airflow which is the primary reason why I have to run it even when the temps outside are comfortable.
