The person in front of me got pulled over for speeding. I was listening to Howard Stern and laughing pretty hard, so I had no idea that an unmarked cop was tailgating me. We were in the left lane, the cop went past me in the middle lane and cut in front of me to pull over the Lincoln Navigator.

I'm not sure why he pulled him/her over, but it seemed like we were moving along with traffic, at about 75-80MPH (in a 55). It was shortly after the Navigator and I entered the highway from another, so we were probably going upwards to 85-90 while we were merging.

The scary thing is that I enter that highway like that everyday, even w/o someone in front of me.

I was following two people at high speeds a month or two back and we got NAILED by a radar trap doing 90+ all of us, and we were all speeding up. I was behind a BMW, who was behind an eclipse (girl driving). She was further ahead doing at least 100. Cop pulled out and I knew somebody was going to get it, so I pulled into the center lane and he flicked his lights and got the eclipse. Whoo hoo!

cops will normally go for the bigger car, especially a big SUV like the navigator which is more much more unstable at that speed.

In my experiance, the police always pull over the car that is leading when several are breaking the speed limit.

i've seen it both ways where they grab the last one. middle is the only one that is always safe.

Makes sense, becuase they are the bad influence :) Also, it's the first car that the cop notices. I know that they can pull over multiple cars though. Thing is I was going 77 before these two people encouraged me to go faster

The second, third and other cars following also can argue in court that you/they where just staying with the traffic flow.

I've seen a cop pull over the whole line (4 cars).

Here in the s/west its generally the lead car that gets it. When trucks run fast together, the safest place to be is in the middle, called "the rocking chair." Probably because you can relax. I miss the days when on coming cars would flash their hi-beams fast to warn of speed traps........:sun:

I was following someone go 95+ or so in the HOV lane (same highway), and when we reached the top of a hill, lo and behold, a cop standing outside their vehicle pointing a radar gun at us.

The officer motioned the car in front of me to pull over, and I just cruised past them. The cop might have also motioned for me to pull over, but I was staring straight ahead and didn't notice.

Dumb question - what does HOV stand for? Don't have these where I live and I have tried and failed to come up with reasonable words to fit. Thanks in advance.

High Occupancy Vehicle Lane. It's a car pool lane. Buses, vans, car pools etc.. your family can count as passengers too, making your car a carpool. Motorcycles, however, can drive in HOV lanes with only one person.

And I've been through many speed traps and got lucky. Plus I never did 90mph before...

I live off of 206 in NJ where the posted speed limit is 40 MPH. They just finished construction and now 206 for a long 10-20 mile stretch is 3-4 lanes. No one does 40 mph down a 4 lane highway! But, none the less, almost every day I went home from work I saw someone pulled over on that 5 mile stretch of highway. I still do 20 Mph over the limit each day, and I still get cut off or passed by. I' say people who pass me while I'm doing a 60 in a 40 deserve the damn ticket.

usually when I am driving on the highway, I find one person that is going faster than me, and go a few mph below what they are doing. That car is usually my "insurance" car, and if there are any cops ahead, they will get it before I do. On the highway that I do most of my driving, there is only one unmarked car, but I have seen it enough that I have the license plate memorized in case I happen to be following it. Call me paranoid, but I can't afford to have any more blemishes on my record.

i was in VA and using a radar detector, which are illegal in that state.

to make it worst, I66 turns into HOV only during rush hour. yes, the whole damn highway is HOV for a 10 mile section.

so i'm with an illegal radar detector and traveling alone on this HOV highway. i exit and there's a cop at the end of the exit ramp. there's like 5 cars pulled over for HOV violation.

LUCKY for me that he was busy with one of the cars that he didn't look up when i passed. PHEW!

I've never heard of turning a W H O L E highway into HOV, that's incredible! Is the traffic really that bad there? I hope there are alternative highways you can take...

In my experience, the cops usually pull the car behind the front car or the last car in a pack if they are close together. The car behind is the limit pusher.
