Personally i don't suggest anybody owrking in Canada. The tax is so high. If you make approx. CAN$ 50,000 then almost 50% will be taxed. Plus 15% on almost all goods that you purchase. Not to mention the rent is high.

valhalla You don't live here do you?

$50k you'll pay about 35% in taxes...there is a reason we like the place though; because money isn't everything...very tempting to go statewards but money notwithstanding I think the quality of life in Canada is much higher.

Valhalla2000 - it all depends.

For example, I am part of one half of a team that performs a specific set of work for a Global corp. Our half is in Ontario, the other half is in the U.S.

It looks like they make significantly more than we do, especially with the exchange rate and taxes taken into account.

BUT - our team drives pretty new cars, have bought houses, etc... and they haven't, as everything is way too expensive.

Money is one thing, but in the end it comes back to the life that money can provide where you are!

Skoorb,

Here are some *major* cities that play a role in IT employment in Ontario:

Ottawa -- Known as the "Silcone Valley North" (sort of, but you get the idea), it is rich in IT and is the location of a lot of the major North American companies/firms head offices'.

Toronto -- Per capita, not quite as good as Ottawa, but it's not TOO hard ot find a job, with a good bit of experience.

Mississauga -- Sort of west of Toronto's main core. This are is BOOMING right now, growing very fast! Most major Canadian companies or other global firms (Canadian offices) are located in this area. Lots of jobs here, plus it's not as "dirty" as a lot of parts of Toronto.

Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge -- Don`t know too much about them, but I have heard good things about the IT market in these cities. Although, the cities themselves are pretty bland. But, that's just my opinion. ;)

London -- Not too bad, very nice city, especially if you are in your 20's! IT ain`t too bad there either.

Kingston -- Not booming, but not dying. Two major privately owned ISP's there - Kingston.net and IGS. I know the owner of Kingston.net, and they are doing very well... e-mail them to see what they think of IT in Kingston. I won`t go without saying that Kingston and surrounding area is very nice, especially if you are into cottages on islands, island hoping, watersports, etc. Summers are great there!

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Cheers!

Skoorb,

Personally, over all the places I listed, I would choose Ottawa.

Not because it excels in one area, but because Ottawa is a very well rounded city.

I guess you have to think through your priorities.

In my case, I like Ottawa, because it's well rounded, clean, lots of snow in the winter (I SKI!),
great summers (not too hot), has everything you could want/need, and jobs aren`t too hard to find!

God speed!

Liverwort - not sure about any nursing specifics, but I'm pretty sure I heard on the news that the government is behind in their promise to hire thousands of nurses because they were having trouble locating enough qualified nurses to fill positions.

Unfortunately, thats all from memory and thus prone to error, and a quick search of 2 Canadian news sites didn't find the story...

I live in Toronto. But i don't like living here.
It's not all because of tax. The living standard are just so so. I just don't understand why
Toronto is ranked #1 place to live. This city lacks good entertainment, winter is too cold, too many
people that don't know how to behave themselves, beleive it or not, its the most UNFRIENDLY
city in the world. I don't care what other people say, this is just my opinion.

Bluga, valhalla, or whatever your nik is,

What in blazes are you talking about?

Shortage of entertainment in Toronto? That's not just wrong, it completely destroys your credibility. And yes, winter is cold. Personally, I typically find the summer too hot (except the past one). Standard of living so-so? Yes, housing costs more in the city, but salaries are also higher.

When you're writing your next essay for U of T (where my wife is a TA and Ph.D. candidate), please consider your arguments more carefully, lest ye dig yourself a hole as big as this one.

Regards,
Craig

<< This city [Toronto] lacks good entertainment >>

What? Unless you normally reside in New York or Los Angeles
I have no idea how you could come to that conclusion.
