There are good IT auditors/consultants out there but they're so few and far between that in my experience, 90% of them are clueless fuckwads who couldn't hack it in a high-stress enterprise environment and read from best practice scripts that don't even make sense for the given situations.
Then again, I've worked in places that are completely clueless about IT and NEED people to tell them how not to do things... it works both ways.
My best friend is an auditor/consultant (one of the good ones) and tells me the scariest fucking stories you've ever heard.
As far as a career though, you've got a classic glass ceiling on a consultant gig. You either get forced out or pushed into management.. so keep that in mind. I would personally recommend against it, but that's me.
