It almost seems like atheism is becoming a religion unto itself

Have you noticed that die hard atheists are adopting the same tactics, tone and rhetoric as a lot of other religious zealots?

I don't get it atheists, if they're not hurting anyone, just leave 'em alone, huh?

You, too, are generalizing. I don't even know which atheists you're talking about.

EDIT: Oh, yes - obvious flamebait and tomfoolery.

I guess I should say early on that I don't adopt any religion in particular or at all, really. I do have some admiration for people who can believe in something bigger than them so long as it doesn't lead them to do and say stupid shit, which seems to be the case more often than not.

Well of course there is going to be SOME generalization here, I can't go and point out each person by name, can I? I'm speaking to the group of people who revel in tearing down the beliefs of others.

Wow, that's both insightful and interesting! I've never heard anyone express their beliefs on here quite like that before.

Absolutely. Just another belief/faith system complete with their own preachers.

Oh my science indeed. I shall eat you on my tummy.

That alone is impossible in and of itself.

Explain.

Religion is a ridiculous concept, therefore one cannot believe it and not 'do stupid shit', because believing it is....well, stupid.

You know, most people wait until they're backed into a corner before invoking Blake's Law ("In any discussion of atheism (skepticism, etc.), the probability that someone will compare a vocal atheist to religious fundamentalists increases to one"). But here, someone is starting a thread with it.

Alright, let me qualify that statement:

So long as their belief does not lead them to do stupid shit that will affect those around them.

I have not a problem in the world with that.

The problem is these people try to push their concepts of living upon you...and some of them even run for President.

oh my science. my science is better than yours. Your science is stupid, my science is not.

I shall eat you on my tummy.

Well, since most of us don't believe in hell, we shouldn't be too worried about ending up there.

Never heard of it - but now that I've looked it up, I guess that applies to me. None of this was born out of an argument though, it was just an interesting observation that I was making. Certainly though, you can see some similarities, right?

Most of "us"? I thought you adopted no religion?

I say "us" as in those of us on these boards. You included.

Wait a minute....we sound the generalization alarm when someone complains about an outspoken (and annoying) atheist....but it is perfectly fine to do generalize about someone with some sort of belief.....That seems like a double standard to me....I'm a practicing Catholic (go ahead call me an idiot with half of the tip of penis sawed off, I don't mind) and I've never forced my beliefs on anyone, and I'd say the vast majority of my friends have no clue of my religion with the exception of the crucifix hanging above the door in my bedroom. I know I'm not alone in this and I know there are plenty of atheists that are also mature enough to not try to step on people's toes. It doesn't take a Biochemist (haha...had to throw my education in there somewhere) to realize that a person's belief is a very personal thing and best left alone. Really, is this any different than the flamewars we see about Halo vs. some other fps. God fits with my life and that doesn't mean it will someone else or that I'd be better off...or some how more intelligent if i suddenly lost faith (I'm pretty sure it takes a decent brain to be a few semesters away from a Ph.D in biochemistry)

Life after death is what religion threads are all about.

And on the third day this thread will rise from the dead.

That is excellent. I admire you for keeping faith personal to you.

I have worked with a woman who was deeply religious and I didn't know that until I checked her myspace page.

Like I said...I have no problem with people who keep their beliefs to themselves. It's the rest that bother me.
