Sitting here in my fleece coat, heat set to 70 but the house is only 62 degrees, have hot water dribbling out of all the faucets… if the landlord complains about the water bill I might scream.
it’s -10 degrees outside

is your heat broken tho?

My family and I skipped our usual Friday night activity just because the risk associated with being stranded anywhere is too great. Stayed home, play it safe.

good news is it will be 40F by sunday

no & I had my boiler serviced in early Fall, heat is coming up but it just can’t keep up with the cold. This place is really old, zero insulation, we are on the first floor, cold coming up from the basement. I see big area rugs in my future.

Similar up here So. NH. -25C + Windy. Thermostat at 20C, indoor temp at 15C downstairs. When we bought this house, I thought to myself - self, the total linear feet of baseboard looks to be lacking. It is for the few days a year that get cold like this. Furnace is running 100% right now. The bedrooms upstairs stay toasty. I should buy an electric heater for days like this. The builder must not have accounted for the sliding glass door and big windows. Derp.

Kinda sounds like you're a prime candidate for mass save to get some of that sweet sweet free stuff, like insulation

Got down to -13F here last night. Frost on all the windows and a bit under my front door (guess I know what needs air sealing!). Basement hit 37F. I probably should have moved my paints/expensive wood stains and epoxies upstairs...

Sounds like my place, the main floor is very badly sealed so it's very leaky. It has the standard pink insulation as far as I know so insulation itself is not bad, but when I did open up a wall I found that they never taped the vapour barrier. One of these days I need to take down the drywall and redo the insulation and vapour barrier for all outside walls at least on the main floor, but it's a big messy job. 😱

I was going around yesterday with a temperature gun and lots of spots were reading just slightly above zero and that's while the furnace was running. Especially around the second outside door in the kitchen. I think that door alone may be part of my problem too, it seems to seal well but think it's just not well insulated.

We had a minor cold-water freeze under the kitchen sink this morning but it's already partially thawed and no burst pipe thank goodness.

Made it as low as -6f here around 4 am per the thermometer outside my window.

Our poor property manager ( we really like this woman a lot) got stuck down in our cold, damp basement with a hairdryer for HOURS unfreezing a frozen pipe. I felt bad for her
She obviously knows nothing about modern day management and that's a good thing!

Most managers these days would frustrate you into doing the dirty work yourself. They have the Tome of Excuses always open in their minds.

Now you know what you will be doing all summer! 😀

That's low on my list of priorities as it's such a tedious and messy job, but yeah maybe at some point I'll do it. I think it will be less of an issue once I have the wood stove setup though as I'll just be generating so much free heat I'll worry a bit less about loss.

Don't burn your place down!

We had our boiler serviced & I sent her a copy of the bill we paid, we turned on our faucets & let hot water run. I don’t know about the other 3 tenants here but what happens in an uninsulated basement isn’t our issue. We aren’t allowed in the basement, it’s in the lease.

Hit -21F at my house, was -42 with the wind. My brother said they saw -60 in Maine, I don't know how the deer made it but the said he saw them running in fields this morning. I put salted corn out for the deer and suet for the birds, wanted to help them out with some calories for this big plunge.

Saw a pic of the observatory up on Mt. Washington, holy crap. That must have been some night, was probably the coldest place on earth for awhile.

You REALLY shouldn't feed corn to the deer...it's bad for them. (even though they love it) We have a massive herd of deer...protected from hunting, so it keeps getting bigger and bigger...and well-meaning people like you are killing them. (or giving them the screaming shits)

I had to go to 2 appointments this week, it is starting to reach OMG it’s cold status here. Check out my new winter coat 😂
Let's look at the facts.
It early February, and it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere
Boston is located above the 42nd parallel.

And why I don't live in the north.

But never fear, some Canuck will chime in with how cold it is up there, like it's a contest or something.

this isn’t the norm for New England. It gets cold, yes for sure, but this was extreme

Air that cold is only "normal" during winter in central/northern Vermont and New Hampshire. Even then it doesn't usually last more than a few days to a week before moderating.

Northern Maine gets the same kind of nasty winter weather but due to proximity to the Atlantic it doesn't get quite as cold as the aforementioned interior mountain areas.

Well besides the two days this past weekend it's been unseasonably warm in NYC. I think January maybe had 3 days that didn't get into the 40s at some point. This week all our highs are in the 40s and we're even going to get close to 60.

Boston woman dies while trying to walk home amid arctic blast (msn.com)

And my friend had the nerve to tell me never to text his GF's phone ever again, because I said I was "checking the obits" regarding him and his GF, because he was in a car accident and said he might go to the ER a few days later, and said he would "keep me posted", and then proceeded to ghost me for 9 days.

Such a stupid stoner, he doesn't have a car, he and his GF walk everywhere around their town, I hope/wish he would learn to at least check the weather forecast before going out, because of weather events like this one.
