Issues with WinXP firewall

the WinXP firewall seems to prevent me from sending files over AIM, and IRC sometimes. I'm on dialup, so does it really matter if i leave the firewall, or should i just turn it off (i'm connected to the internet for long periods of time on dialup). Should i just turn off WinXP's firewall and try Zone Alarm or something?
