Having some issues out of the blue here. when I boot up and get to the windows is starting screen everything slows up, I mean come back in 10 minutes slow. it goes to a black screen and the mouse pointer is there and can be moved with out any kind of delay. Windows eventually loads and I can open things like my computer, but trying to open task manager and most anything else takes about 5 minutes. Nothing is showing up in task manager that shouldn't be I've even disabled all but the critical. When I try to minimize anything it just disappears but will still show in the taskbar. These same things happen when I try to enter safe mode as well. its an amd 750 with 1 gig ram and has been runnung fine for years

Have you run a recent spyware/antivirus check? If not, do so. Also, have you added or changed anything? You might also try it connected to the internet (disconnect your lan cable). Also, you should check your bios settings to make sure that they are correct, sometimes they change. You should also consider running a diagnostic on your hard drive with the software from the maker, slowdowns of the magnitude you describe can sometimes be a dying hard drive.

I made a typo. when I minimize anything it shows up in task manager but NOT in the taskbar, just completely disappears. I stay up to date with virus/spyware so that may be unlikely. I tried to connect another hd to it to format but xp can't see the drive at all. dad may just have to finally buy a new system.

what? no, buying a new computer is jumping the gun. Can you not just format this hard drive? I'm sure when you tried to all another hard drive you just misconfigured it somehow, perhaps you should give a bit of detail about how you did that.

Have you tried system restore or tried to repair the installation?

Also, check in device manager to see if your hard drive is running in DMA mode as it should be.
